I hunted in up state New York with my wife's cousin's husband. He used a Remington 760. Which is the 30-06 pump referred to above. Very popular with hunters in the North East. I was very impressed with his skill with this rifle. They have a completely different style of hunting there. I'm not sure about the weight, but fills the bill in about all the rest of your needs.

I know I am going to get jumped on for this one by the 300 black out fan boys. Do you really think that it is good on Elk out at 300 yards? I guess you will tell me it is as good as the 308, 30-06, 300 Winchester mag or 338. All are common rounds for Elk. I know of a couple of guys that use the 358 Winchester, then they keep shots under 400 yards. I did read about one guy that used a 358 Hoosier to take an Elk. Then he didn't take it at 300 yards either. If I remember it was just over 100 yards.

The 6.5 Grendel would work better than the 300 blackout. It has more power at 300 yards than the 300 black out. As for the 223 I don't even think they allow it by law to hunt Elk with in Colorado. If I remember they only allow 6mm and up. The bullet has to weigh at least 85 gr or greater and deliver 1000 pounds of energy at 100 yards. I could be wrong on that, you can check.

I am not trying to up set the fan boys just want to give the poster some good information about a round to use.

As for the rife? I would go with the Remington 750 Synthetic in 308 with the limits you have set. It has a 22" barrel and tips the scale at 7.5 pounds with iron sights. You put a scope on it and that is extra. Oh, if you go with the AR you must get mags that will hold no more than six rounds per Colorado hunting laws. The 750 holds four rounds in its mag.

Good luck on your hunt and new rifle what ever you decide on.

The weight limit is killing me. I think would do a 6.5 grendal build.

If it wasn't for the weight limit, I would choose an sbr'ed AR-10.

Your Remmy 750 is so close to what you're looking for, why not use it? Unless this is a reason to buy a new toy, then it's an old, outdated, long, heavy, POS that shouldn't be carried into the woods. :)

No I get it. It would be 4.5 @ 300yds. Still not going to happen. Show me some proof;)

    I used to own a Remington 742 in 30-06.

Nice looking rifle with moderate recoil thanks to the action, but not reliable or particularly accurate. The bolt rails get chewed up pretty easily causing cycling and feeding issues, and one might expect 2MOA with factory ammo that it doesn't hate. I guess that's good enough for an elk at 300yd...but not up to my personal standard.

The 7400 and 750 are modern variations of the 742. The 7400 reportedly has similar issues to the 742 despite refinement, and I have not heard anything about the newer 750.

I'd personally skip any autoloading 740-based centerfire and opt instead for the pump action 7600...its a fine rifle with better accuracy than the autoloading version, and one can shoot them as fast as they can cycle the pump. Consider it an 870 to the 742/7400/750's 11-87.

If you're willing to budge a bit on the weight, the Marlin 1895SBL (.45-70) fits all the rest. Its a fuzz over on the weight, though, probably 3/4 lb depending on scope. Well, I take that back. Its not low recoil.

I don't know what it weighs, but a Savage Model 99 carbine in .243 would probably do everything on your list. If you can find one.
Just a question, I am a .308 nut, and a .243, is a necked down .308, would that take an Elk, at 300 yards ?????
