They are, that's why this is news.
Compare pipelines to moving the stuff by truck or train. There are so many truck and train accidents every day that unless they occur very near to us, or involve large numbers of casualties, we don't hear about them.

There is no risk free free anything. Get over it. Moving oil in a pipeline is safe.

When an oil spill happens, it;s regrettable and needs to be remediated by those at fault, but it does not irreparably ruin the earth.
