    It doesn't work that way. Indiana law doesn't reference federal NFA law for definitions. For example, there are combo shotgun/rifles with barells less than 18" and they fall under AOW at the federal level. They are still prohibited in Indiana.

    I stand corrected. It does still fall under the Indiana definition of "Sawed off shotgun" regardless of federal classification. I wonder if they make a version that's never had a stock?

    According to the case posted by Fargo, "A firearm is considered a handgun under the statute regardless of length if such firearm is designed or adapted to be fired from one hand."


    That creates an interesting scenario where under federal law it is a shotgun, but under state law it is a handgun.

    Theoretically, you should be able to register it at that point as a short barreled shotgun with the feds, you would just never be able to reattach the stock while in the state. I seriously doubt that they would go for that through.
