I pretty sure I have pitting in my .308 rifle barrel. I've cleaned it numerous times and it still looks bad. I deployed to Afghan thinking it would be ok for 5 months being properly cleaned and lubeicated but when I got home it was rust brown. I cleaned inside and out thought I was ok until I went to a friend's to shoot. It fired fine but but the brass would get stuck in the chamber. That happened twice before I got irritated and put it away. I pack cotton balls soaked in solvent in the chamber for 3 days then I put my cleaning rod in my drill and spun it at it slowest speed, it looks better than it did but my hopes are not high.
I don't know what else to do or who to even take it to. I called the manufacturer and they wanted me to send it to New York for who knows how long to give me good or bad news. I figured someone has to know something I don't or any gunsmiths near Anderson I could take it to.

The rifle is a Remington model 700p

The guys at Crackshot guns on 53rd might be able to give you some answers. If not, there are 2 gunsmiths in Greenfield just down St. Rd.9. Their names are Richard Marks and Highsmith and they are in the directory.

    steel wool and oil?

    (Copy pasted from another thread)

Depending on how bad it is, you may want to try Bronze Wool. Usually a little less aggressive so if you have some real stubborn rust spots it may not be enough, but it should also be much easier on your finish. The other advantage is that it won't rust. With Steel wool it can leave little bits of steel that will start rusting, bronze wool is usually meant for marine use afaik with rust prevention in mind.
