Not only was it an honest mistake, but he was caught by someone dipping in his conversation with his mother discussing acting to rectify the mistake (i.e., forgetting that the gun was in his vehicle). Yet another example of gross misapplication of the law. The parties responsible for the expulsion and criminal charges are most certainly surplus to the needs of humanity.

    Zero tolerance = zero thought.

Seems like some sort of punishment, maybe a couple of days of detention, reprimand, whatever, is in order. An arrest and expulsion are out of line.

I think as a society, we will be seeing more of these zero tolerance scenarios taking place. It'll happen at all levels of society. It's 1984's Big Brother 30 years late.

I hope a conservative college (oxymoron) will rise up and offer this young man a Scholarship to attend their College.

It's b.s. That felony charge could literally ruin his life.

Of course, but leftist/statist thought is inherently vengeful. It is necessary not only to drive home the idea that guns are eeeeevil, but also that you absolutely do not cross the powers that be with any expectation of having your life ever be the same again.

Unlike most other criminal laws, most gun posession laws lack an "intent" element. Did he intend to possess the gun in his truck on school property or was it an oversight or accident? It doesn't matter. Likewise, many schools have zero tolerance policies that lack an intent requirement. The net effect is to take the discretion away from the administrators best suited to ajudicate the issue. In my mind that is socialism. The decision to punish or not punish him or how to punish him was made years ago by a bunch of bureaucrats who never met this kid, and could never know the facts. The decision is best left to the administrators closest to the situation.

Best course is the police stand by while Mom picks up the gun. Cops forward a report to the DA, and the DA exercises discretion and declines to file. School suspends for three days. End.

Good thing he wasn't also carrying a gun-shaped pop tart.

Zero Tolerance sounds good as an emotional response but fails to address the myriad of variables that are involved when human beings are part of the situation. People with the capacity for reasonable thought and the authority to use their discretion need to be part of the response to complex situations.

Seriously. The people who take guns to school for the purpose of mass shootings don't get enough swift justice but the kid who called his mom to tell her about his mistake gets struck down like this? How's that right?

The liberals have gotten way out of control.
If they suspend a kid for a picture of a gun
you can bet anyone involved in a situation like the one posted here
will be made an example of.

Yet another example of how community values are being replaced by PC agenda driven directives. From the article, the kid should drop out of high school and take Liberty College up on their offer to let him finish his high school academics there. That would deny the HS of a graduating honors student and add to their drop out rate, beyond that, the local media should do an expose on the way the punishment was administered to the vice principal and the other staff member that brought firearms to school, but they won't.

An assistant principal receives a 3 day suspension, but a student who actively takes steps to immediately correct an oversight is essentially expelled and criminally charged?

Hypocrisy doesn't begin to describe this matter. It was an arbitrary and capricious decision, under the guise of enforcing a school policy barring firearms.

I would go out of my way to become a school board member and not only change how the school conducts such business, but at the very least, remove the ability of the mentioned school employee to take even so much as passively take action when it comes to disciplinary measures. Its obvious that his judgement is compromised.

I have a good friend who lost his job of 22 years by leaving a portion of his EDC gun exposed in his car at work. Justice, I think not.
Justice, for this young man I hope will be forthcomming.

    Hope this isn't a dupe.

So the kid makes what seems to be a honest mistake. What are INGO' s thoughts on this story?

Why is #FreeCole taking over Twitter? – Glenn Beck

It's a good thing he was caught and expelled and I sure hope they send this kid to prison. Clearly he's NOT been paying attention in school and is clearly an intolerant hate-monger.

He's known to associate with the anti-homosexual group called the "Boy Scouts of America" but we all know these people are NOT "scouting for boys" but rather are out there in the woods making fires, emitting carbon, and generally keeping the fauna in a panic.

In addition to his Boy Scout card this kid was found to have an NRA membership card. So we know that not only is he a anti-gay hate monger but he's a crazed gun-lover just looking for the opportunity to start a shooting spree at the sight of a mugger or other down-on-their-luck person who has only turned to crime because they had no other choice.

The fact that this kid even HAS a gun at all is reason enough for him to be tried and HANGED. The school has repeatedly warned all students that guns are for the "authorities" only and should NEVER EVER be handled or even discussed by ordinary citizens. He clearly didn't pay attention to the school's well known policy of what to do when a gun is seen:

    1) Run away FAST.
    2) Tell a teacher.
    3) Confess your guilt at seeing the gun.
    4) Thank your government for keeping you safe from such horrific danger.

Hopefully this kid will be rehabilitated and reformed in prison! He's ABSOLUTELY NOT the kind of person who should be roaming our streets. He could grow up to be a intolerant CONSERVATIVE and that simply can't be tolerated!

This is wrong. As HoughMade said "zero tolerance = zero thought." This punishment is teaching him nothing. He made an honest mistake and tried to correct it (by doing it the right way and taking care of it right away) but the school and gov officials labeled him a criminal.
