Question about picking up a rifle from a shop

I just purchased an M44 from a gun show, but since I have terrible luck I have a delay before I can pick up the rifle. The owner of the rifle's shop is about 2 1/2 hours away from me and I really don't want to wait until December to pick it up next time the show is here. Is it possible/legal to have a friend pick up the rifle with my receipt since he will be headed that way in a few days?

you have to pick it up at store bought from or have it shipped to a dealer in your area and go through the paperwork again.
