My wife and I are learning as much as we can to be prepared WHEN this depression really hits. We are stocking up and my wife is planning a garden for the family this spring. This will give us some practice at growing our own. It's a good start.

Even if the SHTF scenarios never happen, it's always in everyones best interest if people can be self sufficient. Regardless of the state of our world, it's a skill set and a mind set that everyone should possess or at least be working towards expanding their skills.

All the canned food in the world is worthless without improving your skillset.

Can you successfully grow a garden large enough to feed your family and put back for winter?

    Can you hunt?

    Can you fish?

Animal Husbandry? (Not the type JClark likes I mean raising animals)

Do you have a means to heat your home if there is a disruption of services?

Become more self sufficient now and it won't hurt as much later.

    Raise chickens... Meat and eggs
    Grow a garden...
    Get a REAL wood stove...
Have a couple years worth of firewood on hand(green wood is very inefficient)
Pastas store well and have a high calorie count.
    Spices to flavor you LTS

It is not anything new, Go back to the way your grandparents lived. Have a stocked pantry, if you have to run to the corner to make dinner your screwed.

I understand what you are getting at, but storing canned food IS a skillset, no matter how menial. Most folks don't know what to get or where to start. It goes beyond learning how to stock a pantry. Folks my age (early 30s) were never taught a day of home economics in public screwel. I'm the only one of all my friends that knows how to do any basic canning.

As to the more advanced stuff, I did put myself to a test this winter and did my first Mishawaka winter without a furnace, using alternate heat sources and electric appliances. Now I know I can do it every year. Now the trick is some means of getting alternate electric. I'm looking for a piece a little more in the country for that.

    Agree 100%

If people lived with a true mindset of self sufficiency on every level, there would have been no subprime mortgage crisis. People were banking on high paying jobs being there forever.

Your right I didn't realize you meant canning I assumed you meant buying canned food.

I am in the process of learning to can, it is a lost art. I want to make and store ready to eat stuff like stews, soups, sauces. Last year I did make Strawberry Preserves!!! OMG they were better then sex!!!

This year I a changing my planting also I will be planting many more items for canning verses eating fresh from the garden.

    Roma Tomatoes for sauces.
    Cukes for pickles
    Sweet Corn
    And much more.

I will be starting my seeds next week I have about a 200ft x 40ft garden so I stay busy keeping it weed free and growing good.

We started canning last year. This year the weeds are going to be under control.Go to Tractor supply or Rural King and get real weed treatments(ortho is a joke). You can pre-treat for weeds as soon as the snow melts(you may want to let your soil dry out for a few days so your treatment does not just run off).Last year I set up a canning class for INGO through the Johnson County anex office....any interest if I where to set up another one?

This is some scary stuff, especially the Beck video. The first thing we all should do is get out of debt. I know, you can't pay off your house just like that, but pay off the other stuff. My wife and I started this about 2 years ago, and now the only debt we have is our home. It just makes life so much easier in scary times like this. No, you can't have the new car, or the Alaska cruise, or the membership to the local country club, but you can have a lot less stress. (And a few more dollars on hand)

While I neither agree nor disagree with the OP, what did you base your comment of "fake" on? He neither quoted nor mentioned any by name. Does the OP have a reputation of posting ficticous information? If he does than why play to the drama, if not then why so defensive?

Having read all the comments to date, a balance aproach is best. Do one thing without doing some of the others you could find yourself in trouble. Learned skills and making the best of the tools you have including guns and money is a sound appoach.

High end guns? not my interest anyway. I like a gun that does what it is designed for. If it looks too good doing it, someone will want to steal it and defeat the purpose of having the gun. ( IMHO ) My drill isn't a pretty one either, it just gets the job done.

My first reaction was flame, but I think 6birds was making a joke.

To answer his question though, they're all hoping and paying for the "housing recovery".

Elections do have consequences. I do not trust any politician once he gets to Washington. Every one of them, particularly the ones who call themselves a conservative will disappoint their supporters. Bush II was not the brightest star in the sky or even an honest president, but I really hope that the people who voted for hope and change are happy with themselves for the pain and suffering that they have inflicted on this once great nation. The bammer has to tear it all down so that he can build it back up into something resembling the models desired by his real mentors. Look what political correctness has done for Germany, France and England. We need more Geert Wilders around here to get us up off our butts and elect people who will start doing what needs to be done to stop the bleeding. Just my two cents.

Just this afternoon, there was a dude with a "sandwich board" sign on that said, "We pay 30% more for gold and jewelry!" -- not sure if it was Smith's on the square or what, but I've never seen that in town before.

it was a blizzard and they guy/gal was still out there, crazy

My house is paid off but ,it still scares my on haw to pay the taxes when things get real bad. I cant see them ever suspending them so if you dont have a job ,I guess they'll just try to take it.

What do you think Mc cain would have done different? I dont care for the current admin either. Who do you think really runs this country? Ever hear of Pastor Linsey Williams? Listen to what he has to say. He has been real insightful in years past.

Stocking up on canned goods sounds like a good idea to me. when it does come crashing down and money is worthless. you better have a trade or goods worth bartering for. No one will want gold or silver either as payment if they can't do anything with it. If you can't eat it or produce energy with it, it probably wont be worth much.

I think gold and silver are a good investment for the interim period between now and total shtf. During WWII (sort of an interim period, since civilization survived) people in Europe made it across borders, etc. because they'd stashed a little gold.

Good call man. That's my conclusion. If shtf doesn't happen soon, I don't see the majority of our fellow citizens moving away from hopey changey socialism and have concluded that my kids need to keep the mindset.
