Out of powder and cases so started looking at cost for supply's. I use cfe 223 powder, cci 41 primers, Hornady 62 grain fmjbt bullets. If I had to purchase cases, once fired .223 for 1000 cost 205.96. The powder would cost 72.38 for 2 pounds. The primers cost 116.99. The bullet cost 109.90. Hasmat fee 22.99. total cost 418.32. I can get Winchester lake city 55 grain for 489.99 for a 1000. Granted its not the same powder, primers, or bullet weight. but the cost is close. Does it make since to have to do all the labor to make 1000 rounds for a savings of a few cents a round?

So, instead of paying shipping and hazmat, Hunt around and buy local. INGO recently had a Group Buy on primers at $84/100 with no Hazmat, shipping or tax. Or look in the classified ads. Brian’s Surplus has bullets and powder at much lower prices. Shop around locally. Finally, I don’t think you can bring in the time spent as a cost, after all it is a hobby. My :twocents:!

Depends on what you enjoy and if time or money is more important.

Winchester 855 used to be purchased at what I could get the ingredients for. Made no sense to reload then.

Now 855 is hard to find and expensive. Should have ordered a pallet full. I have ingredients to make something that shoots close to it.

I like to handload for fun and to get accurate rounds. Most of my AR's are not worth the extra effort except my bushmaster long barrel. My triple deuce is another story.

My 223s are used for precision shooting and nearly all my loads are Sierra match bullets or Hornady V-MAX. I could not afford to pay $30 bucks or more for a box of 20 rounds 69 Sierra grain match ammo but can afford to reloading them. Even my lone AR is most often fired with 77 grain match bullets.

    I don't reload no 55gr or 62gr.
I only reload 75gr Speer Gold Dot, 75gr Speer TMJBT, 75gr Hornady Match. I vary rarely such as 70gr Speer soft points.

Trust me reloading those is way cheaper than buying.

My old bushmaster is for shooting groundhogs and such. (And such is open for interpretation)

It is accurate but was not made with the the twist to shoot what is now called match bullets or what I still refer to as heavy for caliber bullets. Older rifle older twist but I see no real reason to get a new barrel. It is long barrel varmint barrel and most people don't have a 24 inch AR.

M855 is 62 grain bullet and it shoots the m193 better but m193 became harder to source. It now gets fed the v max 55 and if legal it would do well on deer.

I don't get that accurate results with any of my 16 inch barrels so I don't know if it is the twist or the extra length and velocity. To me the rest can feed off the old stockpile of factory rounds or steel case cause I don't see much difference in what I feed them.

I shop around Brass 223 processed ready to load $105 per 1000. Projectiles 55 Gr FMJ $120 for 1000. Powder Shooters world AR $27.99 I get it local no hazmat. Primers no more the $85 find them local too. I have done 3000 rounds this year. I pick up my brass and that is something I don't have to buy again.

“Blasting” ammo (M193/55gr FMJ) I just buy. I’m getting set up to reload for the more accurate stuff I need, or for some of the more obscure cartridges I shoot.

Reloading makes the most sense when you already have the used brass. Personally, I didn't reload .223 or 9mm until the ammo shortage. Bullet selection is the biggest variable in cost if you already have the brass.

I should have said THOUSANDS! Buckets full. Loading more 62grainers cause I have four more ammo cans to fill. Even my son can't shoot up all of it then.
My thing 2 will be home at the end of may for 2 months + -, he will burn easily 4-5,000 in 5.56 And more than that in 9mm.
Preparing for his next deployment. Thank god for owning Dillons.

You need that automated reloader I posted about awhile back. Sit it up, and turn it on for an hour, and you're done. ;)

I stopped at three 550's and three shotshell loaders. Wife doesn't like blue or red colors I guess
    Awesome machines those 550's.

    A 450, two 550's, two 650's and a RL 1100.
I run my 550's way more than the others.

Baby jesus I have a confession,
Its now been 34 days that I havent bought anything blue...

    No wife.
