I own that exact gun and it's one of my favorite 1911s to shoot. The thing that attracts me to guns like that are the straight slide serrations and original look and feel. Too many companies screw up an otherwise nice 1911 with angled serrations. The only two mods I've made to mine are an EGW angled barrel bushing ($23) and an EGW flat firing pin stop. The angled barrel bushing was to clean up the little bit of a hang up as the slide comes forward, but was not needed but mostly just solving an issue that existed in my mind. The flat bottom firing pin stop was an experiment to see how it changed the feel and I now run them in my Ed Brown and Kimber 1911s too. It really improves the feel of the 1911 to me. I also stripped the grips of the shiny finish, recut the checkering, stained and refinished with tung oil.

I've never had an issue with slide bite with this gun. Not even once. When I want to go shooting just for the sheer fun of shooting a 1911 in .45, this is typically the gun I take. I really like how this gun captures the feel of a GI 1911 but in stainless. Here's a photo of mine:

I have a blued R1. put quite a few rounds through it with out a problem. Eats anything and is reasonably accurate, (ok I'm sure it's more accurate than I'm able to shoot it). Never been slide bit by it but I don't have overly large hands and watch my grip. Like all full size 1911 I've shot it's a natural pointer. I like the look of that stainless R1 and may have to pick one up to go along with the blued one. I don't carry mine, I have other guns that are lighter, more comfortable, (for me) and have a higher capacity for that role so I can't really speak to that issue.

I have the Remington 1911 R1S Enhanced. I love it. I got it at a steal through a buddy who works at Remington (try 70% off MSRP!!!). The grip is aggressive but comfy, the trigger is light, and it's so much easier to get shots right on target with this 45ACP than my 9mm Berettas. The fiber optic front sight and adjustable rear sight come standard on the enhanced.

Actually there was plenty of criticism against the Remington 1911 when it was introduced. Remington is new to the 1911 game and they took some radical departures from the original blueprint that did cause problems. They have fixed the major complaint - the huge bevel cut on the frame bridge that forces all of the recoil force to be concentrated on the bottom of the barrel's lower lugs. The first thing you learn about fitting 1911 barrels is that the recoil force must go against the top of the barrel's bottom lugs - not the top. Not doing so almost guarantees you will shear off the lower barrel lugs. If you don't believe me just ask Bill Wilson about this. Remington will learn over time. I would wait and see.

The gun in my avatar is my R1 stainless. When I feel like just going to the range to get my shooting fix, this is the gun I most likely take with me. I had some functioning problems early on but quality magazines (CheckMate, Chip Mc and 47Ds) along with a ramp polish cured it. Drail is correct in his statement posted above. I read that Remington has fixed the bowtie/butterfly frame cut problem. Mine does not look like the pictures of the early R1 with the problem and it is a great shooter. I actually bought it used from Bob at PSS. It didn't look like it had ever been fired and certainly no more than a couple of magazines were fired through it. That was well over a thousand rounds ago. Slide bite is a non-issue. With that said, if I had the choice between the R1 and the SR1911 for the same money, I'd get the Ruger and never look back. It comes already equipped with the options that you'd end up wanting to add to a standard GI 1911.

Only thing I dintnlike about the remington 1911's are the triggers. Personally I would pony up a couple hundred more dollars for a kimber.

For the price, I'm very impressed with my Ruger SR1911. Now, in addition to the standard full size and standard commander carry size, they have the lightweight carry and the black Night watchman model. Very nice choices.
