Not true. I've had three brand new 10/22s that would cycle subs from the factory.Run sub sonic Long Rifle ammo and your 1022 becomes a straight pull mag fed bolt action.

These mags from Volquartsen have a brass insert in the front that makes the magazine chamber smaller. If there are other modifications I'm unaware of it.Sounds nice. I started to search for shorts magazine for my S&W 15-22, but didn't find anything. I don't know enough about how that works, but figure it's more the magazine, not the ramp for autos?
I'm going to try and find some subsonic .22 LR rounds for my S&W 15-22.Run sub sonic Long Rifle ammo and your 1022 becomes a straight pull mag fed bolt action.

Reg .22 shorts still break the sonic barrier. And they dont work well in a reg 1022 mag

I have some Aguilar Colibri shorts at 590 fps. Will they cycle the .22 short auto models mentioned here, or do they only work with non-subsonic shorts?
I would think shooting a slow round like 590fps would exit but most definitely wont cycle the rifle. (I have one also but didn’t want to take the chance and have a Squib).I'm going to try and find some subsonic .22 LR rounds for my S&W 15-22.

I've had several Model 74s and a couple that was chambered for shorts only, great rifles and relatively inexpensive. If you want to spend a little more money the browning take down or a Model 24 Remington (same gun) are great 22 short only rifles. My Marlin 39A always worked well with shorts but they have gotten pricey.Winchester model 74 in .22 short. That is my favorite semi .22 hands down.
It is what you seek.
Maybe your next rifle could be a pellet rifle. For small critters they are great. For the price you might end up paying for a dedicated 22 short rifle, you could get a pretty nice PCP (Pre Charged Pneumatic). Ammo is always available.
There is some good info in this thread-----> https://www.indianagunowners.com/threads/airguns-not-your-grandmas-red-ryder-bb-gun-anymore.487373/
I reviewed one of the Rossi Rio Bravo lever guns in 22lr and it shoots 22shorts without a hitch. Great little rifle that wont break the bank..
