House Bill 1231 - Deer hunting - Indiana General Assembly, 2016 Session

Didn't know what forum to put it in. I've been kinda busy, didn't know this was being considered, I like it except the calibers that are legal. I have a .270.

So.... caliber experts school me. Why would a .243 be legal but not the .270? Just curious.

I think they had assembled a list of 10 or so "popular/common" calibers that got approved, and apparently .270 wasn't common enough in their minds

Please don't get me wrong, I am not butt hurt over the 270 not being legal, but isn't it a better caliber for the frisky bambi than a .243?

I haven't deer hunted in a couple years. Did ok with slugs. If my 270 was legal I might entertain hunting again.

    So a 308 is legal
A 308 necked down to 243 is legal
    A 30-06 is legal
But a 30-06 necked down to 270 (which has ballistics between 308 and 30-06) is ILLEGAL!!!!!!!!!!!

    Idiocy at its finest.

Good to see 300 is so open ended, though. I'll be working up a custom chamber to neck down a 50 BMG to .300.

Indiana has always had some weird rules regarding legal weapons for deer. Strange also that there are no weapons restrictions for coyote mainly hunted from the ground but get in a deerstand and now there's a concern. But at least it's getting better.

The other (large) thread contains rumors that the bill will undergo "technical correction" this summer in which the VERY open-ended chamberings are restricted down to their most popular/common types, ie. 243 Winchester (not WSSM), 300 Win Mag (not 300 Blackout, 300 Whisper, 300 Savage, 300 Norma Mag, 300 Rem Ultra Mag, etc).

I *hope* this does not happen, but that's the rumor.

I'd be swell if DNR would simply revert to last year's proposal of anything 6mm or larger...but I'm not holding my breath.

A step in the direction of progress...

Surprised they didn't include .358 Hoosier since it was more or less developed for Indiana deer hunting.

Also sounds like 300AAC will likely end up only usable in a "handgun" unless they completely re-wrote the handgun criteria.

It is my understanding is that all calibers that were legal are still legal such as the Hoosier and 44mag. They are just adding more calibers to the mix. I would like to see the 358 Winchester added as well. Then I already have the Hoosier and that is just a shorter 358 Winchester. I will be sticking with it. I see no reason to replace it. Then if it is added, the 358 Winchester it will just give me more choices of riles to use because I have a 358 Winchester, 308 and 243.
