I mounted a scope to my maverick 88 tonight and the objective bell is 4 sheets of paper away from the barrel. I'll be shooting full power sabot slugs through it. Am I going to break the scope or will I be OK?

This may sound weird but mounting it low as you can to the barrel without touching it is accually the best you can get. You will get the best check weild to the stock and with the comb of a maverac (Made to shoot open sight) you want it low.

Lower is better. If you can put 4 sheets of paper through it, as stated already you're good to go. Scope and barrel shouldn't touch each other even during firing as long as the mounts and rings are tightened properly (don't over-tighten, just follow the instructions).
