Needless to say there was no way to distinguish the front sight from the rest of my house as it was all black. Same thing with the bead on my shotgun, nothing but black.

A flashlight is on my list of things to get, however it's a little further down than my sighting system is.

This is an important fact you are missing, and is why I recommend the flashlight first.....

A red dot will make it even harder to see detail because the bright dot will hit your eye like the sun in a pitch black house.

I'm assuming the automatic lighting versions will compensate for it being dark.

The point is, it will not illuminate your target. The dot will be visible compared to irons, but beyond that will still be black....

No matter the brightness of the dot, your eye will focus on it, making the dark house even darker.

My question is why run through a pitch black house in the first place? I use the X-10 system, I hit one button and a bright light goes on in every room in the house except the bedroom. Bad guys hate light and that alone will most likely cause them to leave. If not they will be just about blinded by the light and back lit nicely should they decide to try to come into the bedroom.

A shotgun is a terrible house clearing tool at any rate, much better off with a handgun. A shotgun's place in home defense is use from a static defensive position. :twocents:

That x-10 system seems like a good idea! and fairly affordable too! hmmm.

I understand that a red dot will not illuminate a target, hence why the flashlight is on my list. My choice for a shotgun is not for debate since I didn't ask for opinions on my firearm choice, you do what you do and I'll do what I do, everyone is different. That being said, I'm leaning towards a rmr with a surefire flashlight, hopefully that will fill the role that I need it to, if not I can use the rmr on something else or sell it.
