It's kind of like glock so it makes no sense

238s are small 380s resembling the Colt Mustang, while the 938s resemble the Mark 4 government.

239s are like a compact pistol that didn't get the memo it was supposed to be compact. Single stack, fairly close to full frame.

226s are full size, 229s are "compacts", 228s (M11A1s) are "sub compact. Basically the barrels get shorter.

    220s and 227s are 45s

    210s are expensive

290s are polymer and small but still weigh 1.5 pounds, but are nice to shoot

    232s are Walther PPK/S ish

    250s are double action only

    etc, etc, etc.

Something you just have to learn. Kind of like Glocks, but cooler

    this helps a little bit

maybe if I tell you what I am looking for it would help
I am looking for a 9mm, metal frame, but a little bit smaller than full size
( not a pocket gun ) but one that would be able to be carried and smaller than my 1911 45acp and also smaller than my SW MP 9mm full size.
oh and I would prefer a thumb safety

They make a 226 in SAO, they may have made a 229 back in the day but don't this year (I don't think).

Besides that, your options are double-single

Sounds though a 239 would be good for you

Sig P238 operates like a 1911 and is a good size, but is only available in .380. Other than caliber, it meets all your criteria, and I can't think of a Sig that meets all of what you want.

228s and 229s are the same size, 228s are 9mm only.

Based on most of that, I'd recommend the 239 also, which is what I carry. It really doesn't have a safety, but think of the decocker as having the first shot availablitly of a revolver which is the double action (DA.)

Go check out the P2XX series with the decockers, you'll love 'em.

thank you everybody for the info ---- it looks like i need to look for a 239
    model in 9mm
now to find one and see if I like it
also to confuse matters more -- I see where beretta makes a 92 in a compact size 9mm
I really should probably try to stay more informed on all of these models and manufacturers --- but there are way too many and I don't buy guns every month, and now that its hard to find most anything in stock it is very difficult to remember what is around the local stores ( here today gone tomorrow )
I will say this - I saw a p938 last week in 9mm and it was too small for my tastes. So I am assuming that the p239 is larger.
