My brother found a Smirnoff rifle #5 .45 caliber in an auction.
Any information on this would be helpful.
He does not have the rifle.it is on active auction now.
Listed under foreign military firearms category.

Is the .45 a Colt (I doubt) or an acp ( also doubt) or something I've never heard of?

I think it's this. Auction just got the name wrong. @Mgderf I'd wager it's 7.62x39. They are also known as Simonov SKS-45 rifles.

Gospodin/Tovarish Sergei G. Simonov, 1894-1986, inspector at Tula, lead designer of such weapons as the Federov, the first assault rifle sorta, a submachine gun which never entered production, the AVS-36 self-loading rifle, and, famously, the PTRS anti-tank rifle which became the CKC or as we know it the SKS which began production in 1945 (but not adopted until 1949):
