    When I was in high school I made some using 1 part potassium nitrate - 2 parts sugar. Melt them together in a pan and it makes like a peanut butter substance. You can then put it into a container (I used empty Grizzly cans) and then stick a piece of cannon fuse in it. They burn for a long time and make a lot of smoke. Just be careful because they emit a pretty good sized flame. That can be good or bad depending on how you want to use it.

    Old film canisters are a great size container since the chew cans are rather large. But you can even just plop some on wax paper and stick the fuze in like that. The mixture hardens into a resin/glass-like material though, so a container is nice. The best part is potassium nitrate is very cheap and so is sugar. The bad thing you need a lighter instead of pulling a pin.
