I know I'm:horse:... I have a friend that is assembling a new upper with a 16" stainless bbl. His question is, should he go with a NiB or Nitride finish BCG?

I suggested NiB for 'slickness' but have seen the coating begin to flake off. So then Nitride would be good for its hardness factor. But with a stainless BBL and extension what would be ideal or is it a wash?

Milspec phosphate argument is not needed. He is purchasing either NiB or Nitride.

    Thanks guys/gals.

M4carbine has seemed to come to the conclusion to stay away from Nitrided bolts (carrier's are OK). Seems the Nitriding process makes them brittle, and more susceptible to failing earlier than mil-spec bolts. They've reported less life out of NiB as well. Coming from guys that run the crap out of their guns, I'd take their advice. They run more rounds through their guns than I ever will.

Honestly, I'd say get a mil-spec bolt. Do whatever funky unicorn blood coating you want on the carrier, but stick with a mil-spec bolt.
