At 20:00 Steve clicked on the radio and signed on to the group discussion. As reports kept coming in, relayed from wherever on the east coast, west coast and through the others in the group Steve let Fred hear the calls so he would start to understand exactly what was going on. On an adult level Fred was getting the big picture. He became physically upset and Steve could see his anxiety building. He tried to calm Fred and reassure him that things would be fine. “That’s what we are prepared for” Steve commented. TJ added that there wasn’t anything they hadn’t thought of in an effort to reassure Fred that things would be ok. Fred replied, “we are prepared for no power, no economy, no government, not an invasion.” Steve was shocked. The boy had paid attention much more then he thought. He knew why there were tons of food stored around the corner in the next room and in the basement of the house. He knew why the home had been purpose built with safety, security and self reliance engineered into it. He knew that the practice drills that Steve had made him complete until it was perfect three times in a row were for times like these. He was starting to understand why the house, buildings and land was built to be a defensible place. Why everyone had been trained to defend it. He now understood why he and his sister had been taught to reload magazines from bulk ammo cans. Why his mother could field dress a rabbit in about 35 seconds even though she hated it. Why they grew a garden and canned the fruit and vegetables that it and the orchard provided. Why every fall a group of Steve’s friends would go hunting and then process the meat making jerky, sausage and froze cuts of venison. Why there were animals to take care of, why the generators were staged to supply power in an emergency, why there were thousands of gallons of fuel in the underground storage tanks that he watched get put in. He now realized what it was all for..

    Survival..

Fred sat on a bucket near the bench with Steve’s radio gear on it. Quietly listening to the Steve and the others talk. Some of the language was confusing to Fred but he understood it was code. Steve wrote down the messages in normal speech to allow Tasha the chance to read them. As he finished one he would hand it to Fred who was allowed to read them and hold them to give to his mother.

TJ came around the corner from the back room and asked Fred if he could help him. Fred looked at Steve as if to ask permission to leave the room. Steve nodded and he promptly got up and headed into the room that he hadn’t really been allowed to go into much. The armory room of the cellar.

Fred walked across the common area of the cellar and into the armory room to find TJ had unpacked two AR rifles from his storage locker. He handed one to Fred who immediately checked the weapon to ensure it was unladed and clear. He had been taught the inner working and controls of an AR platform rifle in past range outings and cleaning sessions with Steve. He took interest in all of the different weapons that he was exposed to. Since he was the proud owner of his vary own rifle he knew what he was supposed to do. Check for clear, be conscious of the muzzle, treat all weapons as loaded but to hold a “real AR” as he called them, something that shot a round other then a 22LR was a big deal to him. He recalled the first time he went to the range with Steve, the day he shot his first gun. Not just one gun, many guns. Fred’s first trip to a shooting range made him a sort of legend in his own little click of friends. Most of which had never seen a gun other then on the Xbox games they all played let alone shoot one.

This talk with his friends brought on a very strong conversation with Steve and Tasha at the kitchen table. The issue of operational security in that Steve explained that he should not go blabbing about all the different guns and ammo and other preparations and training he and his new family were part of.

Fred learned that he should not go to his friends whom he thought he could trust and ramble about shooting more than as a sport, only a little..

In his very first trip to the range Fred shot his moms .380 pocket pistol, Steve’s EDC Ruger 9mm, the old 22LR bolt action Marlin that Steve learned on, a AK 47 Clone and a Mossberg 590 12 gauge riot shotgun. Fred was so excited about shooting the shotgun that didn’t notice he didn’t have the butt of the stock in tight to his shoulder so that when he pulled the trigger the first time it slammed into his shoulder from the recoil and made it ache leaving a bruise that his father threw a fit about in court producing pictures he made Fred pose for.

Fred was a legend before his time and his friends all wanted to “hang out” with him but he preferred to be more of a loaner. Most of the time it was like he was a normal kid but he would go through moods where he didn’t want to talk to anyone, all he would do is sit in his room after completing his chores, or sit in the kid cave and play Xbox and ignore his phone, email and facebook.

As Fred stood there holding TJ’s AR almost at attention TJ sort of giggled as he was going through a duffle stacking loaded magazine and boxes of ammo, a cleaning kit and a box with some optics in it.

Hearing the bolt slam shut when Fred checked the rifle drew Steve’s attention. He hollered from the other room, That thing loaded? “No sir, visual and physical check complete, it’s a safe weapon” as he had been taught to report back. TJ handed him the second AR as Fred lay the first one against the door frame such that it would not fall over. A valuable lesson he had learned the hard way, never let your weapon fall over. A loaded weapon could accidently discharge injuring or even killing someone. Fred checked the second AR to notice that the second one was not the same as the first. This was TJ’s prized AR-10 with a heavy 20 inch barrel. It was much more powerful then the 5.56 AR that he just sat down. It was heavier and had a completely different balance to it. As the bolt slammed back on an empty chamber he looked up at TJ who giggled and said “you should see your face!” with a smile on his face Fred snapped the rifle to order arms and snapped to attention as his Uncle TJ had taught him.

TJ yelled out to Steve, this boys been practicing hasn’t he. Not knowing what TJ was referring to Steve replied, “if you say so” which took a bit of the shine off Fred’s stance which he then relaxed and asked TJ what did he want him to do with the rifles. TJ said set them in the other room on the ready rack. Fred knew exactly what that meant. In the other room, the common room, first room at the bottom of the stairs by the door was a wooden rack made to hold 10 long guns. He put the two AR’s in the second and forth slots, leaving room between for others. He then returned to the store room to find TJ zipping shut a good size duffle and hoisting the strap over his shoulder. TJ pointed at the two soft cases which were folded up on the pallet of white buckets in front of him. “Would ya mind taking those in the other room, I need to put the ladies to bed before we take them out in the cold.” TJ stated. Fred had heard this comment before, and he knew that it meant TJ was taking the two rifles with him back to his place but that he wanted to put them in the soft sided cases which resembled guitar cases. A sort of camouflage if you will for the urban folk who didn’t understand about guns.

Fred walked out of the armory room and over to an empty bench along the opposite wall near the radio room and laid out the soft cases. TJ instructed him to put the big girl in the dark case and the little girl in the kaki colored case.

Once Fred completed his tasks he turned around to see TJ and Steve going over a map hanging on the big cork board on the wall of the radio room. As he walked up to the bench Steve quickly put a second map away that was laying on the bench, rolling it as to not put any creases on it which he knew could show someone who found the map how it was folded thus what area of concentration the map holder had been looking at. “As not to give away our position” came blaring through his head, words Steve had burnt into his brain when they were practicing compass work and land navigation. Fred had won a $20 bet with a science teacher who was stuck teaching his 7[SUP]th[/SUP] Grade class land navigation using a map and compass.

The teacher hadn’t learned or taught this before and did not take into consideration magnetic declination and Fred knew the difference between true north and magnetic north so Fred challenged the teacher. He knew he was right and the young teacher spouted off with a challenge to Fred. Not a month before Fred’s class started the navigation studies Steve had taught Tasha, Fred and some other friends how to tell the difference as well as other orienteering skills useful in land navigation using a map and a compass. The teacher made the mistake of offering a bet, Fred replied how much? The teacher said $20 then realizing that he had just broken school policy, absolutely no gambling on school grounds, he then couldn’t back down and stated that Fred probably didn’t have $20. Fred said challengingly, OH yeah. He then pulled out his wallet and found two fives and a $10 bill and as he flashed the money to the teacher said calmly “put your money where your mouth is” and the teacher had no choice but to take the bet. Once the research was done in the text book and on the internet from the class computer in the corner the teacher quietly reached in his wallet, pulled out a crisp new $20 bill and handed it to Fred and said here, take it, and no one says a word about this to anyone as the class erupted in laughter and applause. The boy was instantly elevated in the social circles he was part of.

Steve explained to everyone on the call in the groups code that they should check in tomorrow at 10 AM and signed off.

As Steve shut down the radio and computer Fred asked TJ if he needed help carrying his stuff to his truck. TJ asked him to hand him the AR-15 and instructed Fred to carry the AR-10 to his truck. The boy eagerly did as he was asked.

TJ grabbed the duffle and picked up the rifle now in it’s modern looking disguise of a guitar case and headed for the door with Fred following along like a happy puppy.

As Steve locked up the outer door Fred reached the power wagon opened up the passenger door and placed the case on the floor leaning against the seat. He helped TJ put the other case next to the first and then moved out of TJ’s way so he could put the duffle on the seat.

Fred extended his hand to which TJ obliged and they shook hands, Fred said see ya later Uncle TJ and he disappeared in the house.

TJ was standing with the driver side door open as Steve walked up, He shook Steve’s hand and explained that he would check in tomorrow before the 10AM radio call via the CB on their standard frequency. Steve agreed and TJ climbed up in the truck and backed away from the garage and took off down the driveway.

As Steve entered the back door of the mud room Fred was standing ready to go in the house and asked if he needed to open the gate for Uncle TJ. He hadn’t really ever referred to TJ as an uncle. Steve reminded him to unlock it first and to wait for the confirmation before attempting to open it.

Once Steve got in the house he confirmed that Fred got the gate shut but that he forgot to lock it. Slightly raising his voice Steve called out for Fred to come to the kitchen. Fred knew what he had forgotten before he even got there. Shortly after Fred came running into the kitchen Tasha walked in with a scowl on her face and her finger in front of her mouth. “SHHHH, Lynn is asleep.” She barked. With that “oops” look on his face Steve apologized. Once his wife stopped scolding him he turned his attention to Fred who was standing in front of him. “Forget something?” Steve asked while looking at the security panel.. With a “whoops” and a smack to his own forehead Fred realized that he forgot to lock the gate. He quickly hit the switch and waited for the confirmation to show that the gate was indeed locked.

Steve didn’t have to say anything more than to remind him that security is of the upmost importance right now. And to reiterate the fact that when the house was in condition yellow he was never to open the gate for anyone without Steve or his mothers ok. He nodded and then asked if he could go play his game. Steve looked at his watch, 21:48, he said you can play for 12 minutes then get to bed. Fred knowing he screwed up with the gate did not argue and scampered off while Tasha tidied up the kitchen.

“Tea?” she asked to which Steve nodded no. “Something else? She asked with that deviously sexy look in her eye that Steve could never say no to. He knew exactly what was on the menu. Steve walked up behind her, gave her a good hug, moved her hair to the side and kissed her neck then whispered in her ear that he would take a shower and meet her in the bedroom. As he turned to walk away he almost stepped on Roscoe who had been hiding since TJ came over. He and TJ didn’t get along. Sitting on the kitchen floor with that please let me pee now look on his face wagging his tail Steve looked at Tasha. She said she would let him out and lock up and arm the alarm and for Steve to go ahead and get his shower. She then tapped him on the butt as she moved towards the mud room door.

Steve grinned and headed towards their bathroom.

Tasha was eagerly waiting on Steve in bed when he opened the bathroom door, the light about blinding her as she squinted her eyes and mumbled “the light, oh the light” some line from an old movie, they both chuckled as Steve flipped off the light and slid beneath the covers to snuggle up with his love..

Morning came a little too early for Steve waking up at about 7 AM. As he turned over to snuggle up with Tasha he tried not to wake her and hoped he would go back to sleep.

Just about the time Steve nodded back off Roscoe jumped up on the bed and grunted like he was trying to wake them up but without barking. More of a short growl. Steve always trusted the instincts of animals, and even though they used to hate one another he and Roscoe had became pretty good pals. “What’s the matter boy?” he whispered to the cat size dog.

Steve realized he should have set out some clothes before climbing into bed naked, the room and everything in it was cooler than he liked but the lower temperature setting of the smart house at night saved them a lot of energy and he hadn’t fired up the wood burner yet to supplement the fuel fired furnace.

Steve put some clothes on as Roscoe was still prancing around by the door and making noise. “SHHhh” Steve kept telling Roscoe. “You are gonna wake her up..” Steve was thinking not wearing anything to bed or having clothes staged was not a good thing when your living with a heightened state of awareness, it sort of slows down your response time for any action. After putting on some sweats and a t-shirt, socks and his house shoes he followed Roscoe down the hall and down the stairs into Lynn’s room. The door was already open enough for him to get in and out as he usually slept with her. Especially when he sensed that she was upset. Steve walked in to find Lynn about to fallout of bed. Something she didn’t do very often but she had been known to do it. Sometimes she would pile her stuffed animals up on the floor to pad her fall. He slid his hand under her legs and slid them back to the middle of the bed followed by her upper torso. Once she was safely in the middle of her bed Steve looked at Roscoe and whispered “OK?” to which he then snorted in appreciation then walked around Steve and jumped up on the bed near Lynn’s feet between her legs and the wall to lay down.

Steve just shook his head half laughing to himself as he walked out of Lynn’s room back up the back stairs to the kitchen.

Walking into the Kitchen Steve flipped on the small TV and quickly muted it. Steve flipped through the satellite channels looking for news. It was odd that the big three networks were not broadcasting any local stations on the satellite, he flipped to the free air antenna and found the local channels were on the air. Some of the bigger networks were airing normal programming. CNN, MSNBC and some of the other lame stream media sources were airing some repeating messages from the government and rerunning news reports from yesterday afternoon. No new news on the national level was curious. Fox news had some coverage of the situation that occurred over the night but were also limited in their coverage. Many times they had showed some remote coverage where reporters must have been a little too close to the action and were either killed or captured and their uplinks shut down.

Steve started writing on the notepad that was always on the counter by the phone. There were reports of attacks all along the east coast, Florida, some of the gulf, most of the west coast had some reports of things happening and the list of cities deemed unsafe by the federal government was running along the bottom of the screen much like a list of school closings.

Fox was showing that the affiliate in Philadelphia went off the air just about midnight explaining that that there were people trying to get into their building and then the channel went off the air.

What clear video of the action there was showed fighting in the streets between cops, national guardsmen and regular military fighting what looked like troops wearing uniforms who were driving Military style vehicles and a mixture of hardened civilian vehicles.

Very puzzled Steve made some more notes when the news reports started to repeat themselves. He realized as he looked at the clock on the microwave they only had 20 minutes worth of news before they started to repeat it.

As his stomach growled he finished up the notes he was making and decided that he would start breakfast. The smell of pancakes and bacon usually woke the house up if not the banging and clanking of a cast iron skillet and the griddle would..

One by one the family started to wake up, first Tasha after she smelled her coffee brewing. Then Fred when he smelled the bacon frying. And finally Lynn when the pancakes were just coming off the griddle.

They sat and ate like any normal day off, slowly waking up, filling their bellies and talking like nothing was wrong. At about 8:30 the TV switched to the bars and tone. And after the tone a computer generated voice spoke as the words of the message rolled across the middle of the screen.

“We interrupt this program. This is a National Emergency. The President of the United states or his designated representative has declared this emergency, stay tuned for an Emergency Action Notification”

Then after the annoyingly long tone the voice and on screen text continued.

“The following message is transmitted at the request of the President of the United States, This message if for all citizens in the continental 48 states. Please take note and act accordingly. At this time the President of the United States is declaring a state of national emergency. Sometime yesterday morning a deliberate and well orchestrated plan to attack and invade our country was started by an as yet to be known force. These forces have taken control of the east coast between Boston and Norfolk extending inland past Washington DC, Philadelphia, New York City, Harrisburg, Hartford and Worcester among other cities. They have seized control of the entire state of Florida virtually cutting it off from the rest of the country as well as control most of the gulf coast cities with forces around New Orleans and Houston. There are reports from the West coast that there are forces occupying most of the coast from San Diego to San Francisco as well as some reports that the entire city of Seattle is being occupied by these unknown forces. Our military has not been successful in thwarting these attacks due to the serious concern for extreme American casualties collaterally because the infiltration is being carried out in densely populated areas. Most of the infiltrators captured have been dressed in military uniforms similar to those of our own armed forces, they look like and speak as normal Americans. They have yet to reveal who they represent only expressing their name and a serial number. At this time, we ask all Americans in the effected areas of the country to stay in their homes, do not attempt to repel these invaders as you may be killed or wounded by US forces trying to thwart their efforts or mistakenly injure or kill American soldiers. All Americans not employed as emergency personnel should stay in their homes until further notice. Any emergency personal should report to their command and prepare for emergency protocols.”

Then there were three beeps and the closing message, “this has been an Emergency Action Notification, stay tuned for further information.” After which the bars and tones came on then a special new bulletin screen for the local network. After a few seconds the news anchors were on camera sitting at their news desks with shocked looks on their faces talking about the message. Steve decided he should reach out to some former associates via the radio and see if he could get more information and went down stairs leaving the kitchen mostly cleaned up.

Tasha asked the kids to make sure their beds were made that they brushed their teeth and to put play clothes on. She reminded them both about their chores. To which Fred turned to Lynn and stated that he would do her outside chores if she would make his bed. They always made deals, traded and compromised well with chores and for the most part did so without any issues.

Tasha finished putting the dirty dishes in the dish washer and started it before she walked down to see if Steve had found anything out.

As she was walking down the hall Tasha could hear Steve talking to someone. They must have been a part of the group because he was talking in the funny coded language that only group members could understand. A code she had not been able to memorize but by using the code books she was able to write down and then repeat a message where as Steve and most of the other men in the group could simply talk that way without thinking.

As she stepped beside her man he reached out his left arm reaching around her waist and pulling her in tight. She leaned over and kissed him on the cheek as he listened and wrote down messages in one of his many log books. With a simple sign off Steve told the other party goodbye then spun his chair around so Tasha could sit on his lap. Something that the kids would find them doing quite often to which they usually said “eewww” or kissing noises to poke fun of their generally affectionate mother and her husband.

Tasha turned to Steve and asked what he had heard. He explained that he had reached out on the groups frequency and that both Russ and Mark replied with information from others that they knew closer to the action. Evidently it is much worse that the message the gooberment had let out. Supposedly these invading troops have made it as far as Richmond, Charlotte, Atlanta and Birmingham with signs that there were some in Jackson. There were reports that many who tried to take parts of Texas were met with fierce resistance from both standard military and regular citizens. Rumors were such that the civilians in and around Houston had pushed them back to almost Galveston.
Tasha expressed some concern to Steve who simply reminded her that their home or “compound” as it was sometimes called was designed and built to where even if the surrounding towns and areas were occupied that they would be safe. Steve tried to reassure her with his confidence that they would be left alone and that if they followed the plans for no light or noise that most would just travel right on by and not concern themselves with the small 40 acre patch of ground surrounded by woods.

Steve had designed the layout of the property so that other than from the air the property would look like nothing more than a large road side boxed woods with large farm plots on all three sides and across the road from them.

Inside the perimeter of trees was standard woven wire fence similar to every other animal farm around. 30 yards inside of that was high tension fencing that was open in spots to allow the animals to get through and yet most easy access and flat areas were impassable because of the fencing. There were countless trip wires, man traps and other deployable items of anti siege weaponry in the plans that could be implemented quickly if anyone did come for them.

If you are serious about getting this published, do yourself a favor -- pay a junior high English teacher to proofread it and make necessary spelling and grammatical corrections/additions/deletions. You will have a more polished product and some unappreciated English teacher will love you for valuing her skills. :)

Steve was squirming under Tasha’s weight when one of the driveway buzzers went off that was installed in the ditches at each end of their property. A recent addition to the security system that was only on when the system was armed so that normal come and go traffic down the road didn’t bother anyone. The buzzer went off, and another came on and did not go back off. Steve knew that meant someone had came up the road from the south and was sitting outside the fence on the road near the gate. Steve reached over and flipped his computer mouse on an icon to pull up the camera system. The double quad split screen popped up to show all 8 of the systems cameras that were currently on. As Steve clicked on the camera that covered the gate he marveled at the detail his camera superbly hidden camera showed. It was something he prided himself on , the camera as with most all of the cameras which scanned the Jameson property was out of sight and in this case hidden in a tree near the drive aimed at the gate.

As he selected zoom it became clear who was at the gate and Tasha squinted and asked, Is that Ben?” to which Steve replied “looks like it is his truck. But I don’t know who is with him.” What are you going to do asked Tasha. Well let me see if I can raise him on the CB.

Steve turned towards the CB flipping the channel selector to 11, the local, “around the property” channel. As Steve keyed the mic he threw a little southern draw in his voice “break one one for Wild Bill, do you have your ears on?” After a second or two Steve heard back, “Go ahead Breaker this is Wild Bill, I read you LAC” Steve spoke in somewhat of a code and Tasha knew he was asking him if it was him at the drive and who was with him. She chuckled as Ben replied, “ Well me and the old coon dog decided to rustle up some vittles and decided we might need to drop by the store and pick some stuff up and drop it off at home.” Which Steve knew to mean it was he and his girlfriend Elizabeth whose handle was Coon Dog cause she could hunt better than most dogs in the county he believed was because of her American Indian ancestors? The message let Steve know that Ben had a load of food and supplies he needed to drop off in the cellar.

Most all of the group members stored food and supplies at each other’s locations even if it was just a simple tote of some canned food, MRE’s and ammo.

Those like Steve with a compound large enough to sustain the whole group had plenty of storage room for everyone’s stuff. The group had gotten together and calculated how much room per person a years worth of supplies would need and built accordingly with an extra third for incidentals and or other members.

Steve radio’d back to Ben asking if there was anything on the horizon, which served two purposes, it reminded Ben to look and see if anyone was coming from either direction and to give him the chance to use a danger word letting Steve know he was being made to ask for entry under duress or at gun point.

Ben’s reply was the standard all clear on the roads and all clear here, “yeah no peepers and definitely no howdy doody..”

Steve flipped his computer over to the security system interface, disarmed the system, unlocked the gate and opened it for Ben and Elizabeth. After watching them pull through Steve closed and locked the gate and rearmed the security systems. Steve decided to turn on the other remote monitoring devices that he had buried along side of the road and around the outer perimeter of the property which would pick up any metallic object the size of a small four wheeler or larger. Steve had plans to install similar devices at each cross road that his road intersected with to give more forewarning of vehicles that were approaching but he hadn’t gotten around to it.

Steve grunted for Tasha to get up off his lap and as she did he asked her if she could start a fresh pot of coffee knowing both Ben and Elizabeth were heavy coffee drinkers and more than likely would be cold when they came in.

Steve followed Tasha up the stairs in a grab ass messing around manner and as he passed her in the kitchen gave her an ear piercing slap on the ass which he knew he would pay for later. Steve loved the fact that her curvy figure looked as good as it did in yoga pants and one of his baggy sweat shirts.

Steve poked his head out the outside door of the mud room to motion for Ben to hold on a second. Ben knew this was to give him time to put clothes on and come out to tell Ben where to move the truck to. Ben knew that Steve took pride in his lawn and driving on grass covered by snow would make some terrible marks. Ben would wait for Steve to guide his efforts.

Just as Steve had donned his clothing and boots and went to head out the door Tasha poked her head in the mud room to let him the know the coffee was brewing and that her ass had a welt on it to which Steve winked and grinned at her as she blurted out “You’ll pay for that Mr. Jameson.”

Steve walked out the back door of the mud room not realizing he didn’t have a rifle. He pulled up the “wait one” finger and returned to the garage to retrieve a rifle and scout pack. As he walked back to the door he thumped himself on the head, never go outside unarmed.

I spell check in my word processor, onlything mispelled is on purpose, "gooberment" etc. Unless I missed something else. I will check better.

It's more than what a spell-checker would catch. It's grammar, word choice and punctuation as well. For example, in the first paragraph you use the word "laying" instead of "lying." Spell-check won't catch that.

Hey, as long as you have a cadre of ardent devotees, keep on posting! I was just letting you know that it would need someone who knows a bit about the English language and sentence structure to look it over first if you were serious about getting it published, that's all.

    Enjoy.
