Its a toss up! A 22lr is hard to beat in most instances. It can kill about anything. Its great for hunting critters you want to eat, its quiet especially if you have a can or oil filter in a shtf scenario. You can carry a few thousand rounds in a backpack. But for up close work a 12ga is about as good as it gets. For all around social work in cqb and medium distance i would want an ar15 with a 1-4x 30mm scope. Good for close range and identifing targets at longer ranges. So for me i would pick 5.56/223, 12ga and 22lr. A 9mm would be nice to but if ****s already hit the fan. Im probably gonna be carrying the ar and give the kiddo the 22lr.

My basic setup is a .45 long colt pistol, .45 long colt rifle, .45-70 rifle, a 12 gauge shotgun and a .22 rifle. That has me covered for absolutely everything, and everything I have except for the .22 can be loaded with smokeless or blackpowder if needed. I also keep a 4" barrel Ruger security six and an SP101 that are part of my EDC. They'll go with me if SHTF and can also be loaded with blackpowder in a pinch. I have dies, the lee handloader and will be adding a lead mold for the .45 and .357 to the kit. Everything I have bought for prepping is everything I intend to use for other things as well (hunting or edc). I don't believe in buying anything for prepping that can't be used as a part of normal life.

No offense, but that "just let me shoot you with it," is a tired old argument. There are certainly merits to the 20 gage beyond the one that naive folks use to justify their dedicated .22LR for self defense.
