    Because actual, consumer gun safes are impenetrable - and don't ever get locks broken, cut/pried into, or simply unbolted/ripped from the floor and carried off.

    Maybe it's like the library - a drop slot that's a long chute, or conveyor belt if your library is all fancyfied.

    This gives me an idea...

    How about I build one of these boxes and put it in my front yard? See what I can get. I mean, if you're just going to throw it away, it may as well go to a good home!

    I like it! Similar to a "no kill shelter" for animals, you could take in unwanted guns with the promise that they won't be destroyed. :)
