    Morning fellow compatriots, cohorts, conspirators
Has the definition of "stainless" been changed? I see a lot of stuff for sale on Armslist that appears to me to be a flat dull and gray. Not what I would call stainless.

Also seems to me most stuff for sale is "South of 40" I may be wrong of course and I am probably generalizing.

    Just wondering

Thanks for the info. I have been enlightened. I was under the impression stainless meant 1 thing. The very mirror like shiny.

There are many grades of stainless. There is a little color difference between them.

There are also ways for mechanically finishing stainless. Too many stainless rifle barrels are way too shiny on a bright day. I have a gunsmith that dulls the finish. Sometimes with bead blasting, sometimes with a process that is basically an oscillation sander while the barrel is in a slowly turning lathe. I have also seen a chemically etched process of changing the appearance of stainless steel.

I have seen some guns that appear to be a coating of some sort, they only way you would know they were stainless is if the manufacturer told you.

My M&P has a stainless steel slide.

It's black. But, of course, that's just the "paint" that they've finished the slide in.

There are many different types of stainless. Also you can finish out stainless in many different finishes, which will change the look.
