Quick- no Google. Who were the last 3 Secretaries of Education and what were their greatest achievements in that role?

Since I can't Google I can't name Obama's appointment but he had a Swedish name and was generally considered eminently qualified. He had many revolutionary theories on education and was predicted to shake up the education field. Eight years later Johnny still can't read and we are hand wringing over the same issues. Apparently, the Secretary of Education really doesn't have much impact on education.

What makes you say that? It may well be legal. It SHOULD be against school policy and result in discipline.

Betsy Devos, never taught a student, never wen't to a public school, her kids never went to a public school. The theories of education, as to whether it is desirable for students to have proficiency or growth (something well understood in the field), she didn't have a clue to what it was. Secretary Devos, cited incorrect figures during her confirmation hearings. Rather than take a strong stance on firearms in school, she took the cheap way out, saying that guys in schools would be beneficial for defense from grizzly bears (apparently she's not speaking of most handguns). When asked if schools should abide by the Disabilities Education Act, the act that provides for things like ramps, lifts, and educational assistance, she said that it should be left up to the states to decide....AFTER being informed of what it was, she said she was confused, and then recanted her previous statement. Aside seemingly being a very nice person, with her heart in the right place, she comes off as clueless. Of all of Trump's pics, she seems to most ignorant about the position that she has been tapped to head.... but with a family giving roundabouts $200m to the GOP over the years, this seems more of quid pro quo choice than an honest belief in her ability to lead the department.

The people that elected Trump do not want another professional NEA drone to head this department. It is a failure at many of the benchmarks rational people would use to test if it is performing its mission (hint: its mission is not to serve as lifetime employment for mediocre teachers and administrators). Like with the election of Trump, we'll take a radical shakeup over what the political client-base of the NEA tells us we should want. HoughMade is correct, given the benchmark set by the current department cadre, it seems hard for someone to do worse

Well Devos wants to spend MORE money. School vouchers.

It's really only more money if we continue to prop up the old, failing system after the bulk of the students (that actually want an education) abandon it in droves. Then, as for the old system: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

The bureaucracy alone for that to occur would be cost prohibitive. Vouchers for every student in the nation which is spent according to their parent's choosing? Geez, that's a logistical nightmare. It would do nothing buy bloat the Dept of Ed. Just another handout... sure to be abused.

Didja know schools get money based on how many kids at school per day? That's why early release snow days happen after lunch

seems they can already track if a kid is in a school and send money based on it
