Ive had 2 MRIs done in the past 3 years. Didn't have any trouble fitting, but it was a bit claustrophobic. Oh and loud.....

with new open concept MRI's, there is no issue with patient size. Lakeshore Bone and Joint institute got one this year, hence an article in the paper. I would highly recommend them for any procedure. They did my ACL replacement surgery in 07 and I had a fantastic recovery time and that knee is better now than it was in high school. The MRI staff was friendly, helpful, and professional.

    A few points:

    • Everyone's skinny and athletic on the internet. No, really.
    • My very first experience of claustrophobia was with an MRI last year.
    • Some professionals like medicine, but not people and take specialist roles instead of doctor roles. They suck with real people.
    • Of course she should lose weight. Bet she already knew that.
    • The doctors need to explain what they have and what they can do. She needs to understand their powers are limited.
    • I tick off customers at work too. Easy to do when expectations are off from reality and emotions are high.

    [/rant]

Its not uncommon for physicians (specials or not) to be narcissistic jerks. The "medical model" creates the role of the doctor as the one who knows all and the patient as the one who knows nothing (and thus needs the doctor). This creates unhealthy relationships, unless both parties work to avoid it.

Further, the medical fields tend to be in demand and high paying. Some people choose to be a doctor because it pays well. They don't necessarily care about people, and they don't necessarily care about their craftmanship. On a related note, many medical settings are very busy- this may be due to having a large practice with many patients (ie high demand on their time) or it may be due to business decisions that dictate the Dr. is to see a new patient every 15 minutes (ie greed).

I agree with Rhino, this woman probably dealt with a jerk. In every field, customer service is important. You can find crappy gun shops, restaurants, auto repair shops, truck drivers, etc. In every field, there are some people who don't give a damn about the quality of their work and just want the clock to hurry up so they can go home and count their paycheck. It shouldn't surprise us that she got bad service in this setting. We get bad service a whole host of other places, the health care industry is just one more place.

I am not saying we should accept this type of behavior, but it happens everywhere, so it shouldn't be a surprise.

Mike E ... thanks for the pointer! If I need an MRI in the future, I will seek one of those units.

Josh E ... well said, Baby New Year! Your first paragraph is especially true.

i am not trying to personally attack anyone, but using this story as comic relief is a shameful endeavor, and anyone who mocks a person in this lady's situation ought to be ashamed of themselves.

I'm not necessarily laughing at her size or health issues. I get a chuckle out of her "should make an MRI that fits most everyone" comment. Sorry, but they do, and she is a bit outside of that range.

The "go to a zoo" comment from the medical staff was a bit inappropriate, unless there is some context not in the article. It is also a bit funny, in a "I can't believe they said that" kind of way.

Try going to an amusement park like Cedar Point.

You will see signs on the roller coasters that state...
"Guests of exceptional size may not be able to ride"
Not exactly sure what that is supposed to mean.
Some of the small coasters I have issue squeezing my 6'1" frame not exactly slim by any stretch into BTW.

She should be ashamed of herself for getting that fat and drawing even more attention to herself. Tubs could have easily gone to the zoo to have an MRI, but chose to make a stink about it.

Or should we blame her knife and fork for the "situation" she's in?

Joe, she is not 'tubby' she is Gravitationally Enhanced :rockwoot:

Actually, gravity is still the same for her as it is for us - she simply has more mass and thus weighs more.

Also, this isn't unheard of in practice.

IF YOU CAN'T FIT INTO THE REGULAR MACHINE, WHERE ELSE DO YOU EXPECT TO ACCOMMODATE YOU?

It's not the MRI Technologists job to find a scanner for her to fit in, it would depend on where chubby is willing to go and her insurance, if she has it, will cover.

I do think the MRI tech should have been polite but since Miss Big was so smart about the need for someone to make a bigger scanner, maybe she was a yahoo to start with.

Generally bigger scanners give somewhat less detailed images then the regular scanners. I am not saying not good enough, just not as good.

I will never understand why people feel it is ok to call this woman names, or insinuate that she is less of a person because she is large. We know so little about the story. Perhaps she is large due to a thyroid problem or any one of a dozen other medical problems that are in no way her fault.

My grandmother used to tell me that if i couldn't say something nice, I shouldn't say anything at all.

I hope this woman has found the appropriate medical attention that she needs, because at the end of the day she is still a person, one of God's children, made in his image and should be treated with the same level of respect. I have a very dear friend who is very large no one here has balls enough to say this stuff to his face.

Also as an aside, some of us guys like big girls. I dated plenty of big gals in my life and I was never ashamed of any of them. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I really don't care how big one gets. If you want to weigh 850 lbs., go for it.
But don't ***** just because there isn't an MRI machine built to scan your bigness.

    :puke:

I call bs Im 15 to 20 lbs over weight and I know it and dont feel as good as I do when Im lighter. I also dont want to make the sacrifices that I know I have to make to get back down to 180.

Fat doesnt just happen from the intake of air. Humans have enough intelligence to take care of the problem. The down fall is that they dont want to put out the effort. An hour a day 5 days a week will keep anyone fit.

Would you feel the same way about her if it were only her boobs that made her unable to fit in the MRI machine?

My moobs are probably cutting it close to let me fit in to the MRI machine when I'm out gettin' my scan on.
