We have had strawberries for a couple years and have had decent luck keeping critters out. Have netting over the top for birds and rabbit fence around.

I think our biggest issue here was having to mulch them so heavily in the winter and frost killing the blossoms in the spring. It's a lot of work to keep them weeded, etc. and (like most fruit in our area) one frost or freeze kills the crop for that year.
