These young men need some serious, intensive, inpatient psychological help. If they're too far gone for that to help then keep them locked up for life. Our society doesn't need these types of sociopaths walking the streets.

I was very happy to see they found who did this and that the second one turned himself in.

    Arson? Check.
    Cruelty to animals? Check.
I'm willing to bet that at least one member of this group had issues with bedwetting late in life.

Someone needs to keep tabs on these folks FOREVER, or we might hear about them 20 years later after they have hacked up 20+ runaways/hitchhikers.

    Keep this in perspective.
Does either one have any priors?
    Particularly cruelty to animals?
If not I'd go a little easy on the sentencing, but yes, mandatory counselling for quite a while.
The thought of it makes me sick, as I think it shoud, and should've them, too.
That said I'm not quite ready to throw a couple of dumbasses into the non redeemable bin.

Agreed. These would be the next Jeffrey Dahmers.

I am just not willing to go easy on them, first time or not. There has to be some moral compass that has a sense of right/wrong. It would seem to be seriously absent here. So if there is no ability to determine right/wrong, how long until they decide to move on to more interesting scenarios, i.e. humans. Whose son/daughter/spouse will have to die before we say, "Enough". I prefer to say it now.
