It happens about every 11 years as the Sun reaches Solar Maximum. Solar Maximum is the time when the Sun is most active. During solar max there are a increased amount of sun spots, solar flares and solar storms, and the Sun will actually flip it's magnetic poles.

Does this mean we will have a CME (Coronal Mass Ejection) that's capable of disrupting power or other electronic happenings on Earth. Maybe or maybe not but during Solar Maximum there is an increased chance.

    For those interested links below.

What this world needs now is a good natural catastrophe, even thought a man made one will do just fine. At least that is what the politicians and obama want. Anything wll do to get our attention away from obama and company.

The A number is 4, the K number is 1. Radiowave Propagation Center: forecast + current sunspot cycle activity, space weather, geomagnetic conditions

The sun ain't doing squat at the moment.

Now, tonight, tomorrow, the next day, who knows?

Solar Cycle 24 is certainly shaping up to be a runt. Even our recent spikes in intensity are well below the corresponding activity minimums from SC23.

    Yep, this^^^^^

I've been waiting for something cool to happen, and still waiting.

Over the last couple years there have been a few solar events, but you wouldn't notice it,
unless you were looking for it.

I remember a solar flare or some such event back about 11 years or so when I was at my first job. We had Motorola radios (walkie-talkies) and couldn't hear squat on them all afternoon. Radio waves were all screwed up, but only for really low power/short range stuff.
