What condition do you carry in? Ie. 1911 style "cocked and locked" or the like? I carry a da/sa semiauto so ill either carry cocked and locked or, hammer down on a loaded chamber without usuing the thumb safety. Thoughts?

agree with above posts... no safeties (or only passive safeties, like grip/trigger safeties)
*** This is for me, w/ my personal experience, w/ polymer guns. ***

    If it were a 1911, i'd go condition 1
Since all guns and users are different, there's no one-size fits all.
My good friend carried his Taurus ______ loaded but with safety on until he felt more comfortable carrying with it off. To each his own, I guess.

As it was designed, with one exception.

When I carried a 1911, cocked and locked.
With my P220, hammer down over a live round in the chamber. There is no external safety.
Revolvers, fulled loaded and hammer down.

The one exception is my farm gun, a single action .44. I carry it hammer down over an empty chamber, as its an older revolver that isn't likely to be drop safe. First two cylinders have snake shot, next three have hollowpoints. I'm more worried about snakes and wild dogs than I am much else out there, but there's always a long gun nearby if 2 legged snakes want to play.

Firearms are designed with various conditions available, so your answer is a bit ambiguous.

The 1911 was not "designed" to be specifically carried in condition 1. It is just as well "designed" to be carried in Condition 0.

Per this document, it strongly suggests to never carry in Condition 2
    http://pdf.textfiles.com/manuals/FIREARMS/s&w_1911.pdf

"WARNING: NEVER ATTEMPT TO CARRY YOUR PISTOL WITH THE HAMMER DOWN ON A LIVE
CARTRIDGE. THIS WOULD REQUIRE YOU TO
DECOCK THE PISTOL WITH A LIVE ROUND IN THE
CHAMBER. DECOCKING THE HAMMER OVER A
LIVE ROUND SHOULD NEVER BE ATTEMPTED. TO
DO SO COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR
    DEATH TO YOU OR OTHERS."

    • Condition Four: Chamber empty, empty magazine, hammer down.
    • Condition Three: Chamber empty, full magazine in place, hammer down.
    • Condition Two: A round chambered, full magazine in place, hammer down.
    • Condition One: A round chambered, full magazine in place, hammer cocked, safety on.
    • Condition Zero: A round chambered, full magazine in place, hammer cocked, safety off.

As you like. I've heard a variety of folklore and mythology about how JMB intended it to be carried vs military requirements and the like, and have no idea what is fact and what is legend

I will recant and say I carried it as it appeared to be designed, and as some well respected folks like Jeff Cooper recommended.

Browning's first design didn't even have a safety and only added one due to the requirements of the Army.

I carry DA/SA or DAO autos, or revolvers. No 'cocking & locking' needed.

'Cocked & Locked' is soooooo last century...

Come to think of it, it's so last millenium, too!

G 19 with one in the pipe and a full mag. The times I carry my 92 FS is for one in the pipe, full mag and safety on. My 642 is a five shot and it is loaded with ......you guessed it, five.

i have carried a polymer gun without one in the chamber. also carried a 1911 with hammer on half cock with one in the chamber. just depends on the occasion. I dont see anything wrong with carrying either way.

IDK, on a polymer gun with a short trigger travel, no matter the holster, it makes me nervous to have one in the pipe. And if you have one of those fancy holsters with a retention system, its just one more thing to fiddle with and raises the chance of a negilegent discharge.

This post can only go well....

Sig 226 one in the chamber, hammer decocked.

Glock 17 one in the chamber

    SP101 one in each chamber

AR15 one in the chamber, safety on

M240 on the feed tray, bolt forward

Catching my drift here? ready to fire on all but the machine gun in which case i can jack the charging handle and i'm ready to go. Not carrying ready to fire is just asking for trouble.
