Sadly with the return of the warm weather comes the return of muskrats. They're a pest to lake owners as their burrows damage the banks and dam. My dad, lovemywoods, posted a couple years ago about a time he came home to find me doing my part in keeping the muskrat population in check.

A couple days ago my brother, esrice, helped me zero my rifle and I was eager to test it. My rifle is a Colt 6920 with a Millet scope. Today, I got my chance. From our deck, I saw a 'scrat in the water, grabbed my rifle, and on its next pass across the lake I sent a bullet through its temple.

About an hour after tossing the muskrat's body in a ravine, I was back on the porch enjoying the last of the sunlight when I saw another muskrat! I couldn't believe it! Normally after the first shot muskrats disappear for the night. So I got my rifle out once more, and with one shot nicely dispatched the second muskrat. He now lies in a ravine next to his buddy.

Once again I'm coming toward the porch when I hear a loud BANG! I didn't know Kr-Treefrog2 was 'hunting' again! :yesway: One more 'rat' floating in the water!

It's a 90-100 yard shot. She shoots well. [/Proud dad moment./] Techres gets some of the credit as he has instructed her in two Appleseeds. :ar15:

Way to go Kr_Treefrog2 make your dad and brother proud of ya!

I disposed of a pair of scrat's from from my buddy ComputerGeek's upstairs bath room window last spring with my Savage Model 63 from 110 yards out.

I had only sighted it in 4 days earlier and got the call from him on the way home from work to come over and dispatch them.

They was both on the opposite side of the pond and got the first one while right on the bank in the water and seen the second one dive in and make a swim underwater towards the other side, it made a fateful mistake by coming up halfway across in a straight line towards me, led it about what I though would be good and it swam right into to it. To this day I call that my luckiest shot I ever made.

near Bedford on a whole lot of land.
    Good work, girl!

I hunt beaver and muskrat on my lake too. Challenging shooting. One day I was walking around my lake and all I had was my Glock 29 when I saw a muskrat swimming about 30 -40 yards away. I got him but it took 5 rounds which cost around $4 worth of self defense ammo :D

    Great job kiddo!

I don't think people have an appreciation of what tough shots these were.

I was thinking the same thing, its against the law to shoot
into or across Indiana waters. Also muskrats are protected
except for trapping season...since it wasn't trapped destroying
property are you sure you can prove that was the one to the DNR?
But the shooting out in the lake is more serious, bullets hitting water
can deflect in weird angles...hope their are no homes around.
