Not sure what to think about this one. I understand situational awareness, but a guy standing next to you at mcdonalds isn't at all unusual or suspicious. His actions are, but honestly, when most of us are at Micky ds, we're looking at the menu and deciding what we want, not trying to figure out the tactical high ground. A sucker punch is just that... and tough to defend against.

I agree with you.. But that guy was acting a little odd, not that I would have noticed if I was actually next to him. A sucker punch is just that, but he did draw back before he hit the guy.
Just need to look out one eye to look at the menu and the other eye to watch for idiots.

Correct. The attacker showed all of the pre assault cues. This would have been an easy one to pick up on with just a little observation. It is not always the case.

from the looks of it, the older gentleman likely thought the guy was a nut-case and was trying to ignore him.

as for situational awareness, it still amazes me how some people can go through life with blinders on. it makes me think they are like the horses that pull buggies, with the covers over their eyes so they have tunnelvision.

There was a story, on the news this evening, of a knockout game incident here in the valley ocurring 12/23 at a bar. The guy came up to 3 people sitting at the bar and went down the line punching them in the back of the head. It looks like the punches to the first 2 gave the 3rd guy time to react and he put the assailant on his back. I believe the report was concerning his court date/appearance.

One really needs to be aware of not only who is in ones bubble, but approaching as well. It literally took just seconds.

I think this must be what you are referring to..

And my friend thought I was crazy when I made our kids sit, listen, and fear the possibilities as I threatened to relieve our children of their lives if they ever even thought pulling a stupid stunt like this was ok. God help them if they were to try it...

    On a side note:

I certainly wanted to cut my own tongue out when I heard the phrase "I brought you into this world," start coming out of my mouth, but I survived another noteworthy mommy moment that reminds me how much like my own mother I've become.

Well, everyone can't be like this.

If you have ever been in a confrontational situation with an idiot like this you will note that they rely on you being fearful of them. They run a huge bluff that usually makes 98% of normal folks move on avoiding the situation. Not that he could not throw if need be but he was all bluff. Once he got in range of the man he was put down. Training trumps idiot most of the time.

An historical note about the dirtbag in the OP video:

Unfortunately it appears the was a Texas boy. Tony Wayne Swinnie already come to police attention for assaulting an elderly person in the 1990s as well as for other anti-social behavior like burlgary and such.

After KOing the older guy (retired teacher, 66 y.o.) in the McDonald's, Swnnie smashed a liquor bottle over the head of a grandmother/store owner in a Waco (Texas) store robbery while her grandkids watched, depicted here:
Martha Jane Speaks About The Liquor Store Robbery - Video

He was convicted (in2007) of the liquor store robbery; his attack at the MacDonald's as well as his other criminal activities were used during sentencing to get him a life sentence:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Op-x7jy_ATk

Not long after he was imprisoned, police came up with evidence that connected him to the death of another older woman who was beaten and left to die in her burning home. (This occurred prior to the McDonald's and liquor store incidents).

Convicted felon charged in death of Waco woman - Houston Chronicle

There are no news articles that I can find about the results of his arrest for the murder of the woman in the burning home. However the Texas Dept of Criminal Justice website shows he was convicted of aggravated assault of an elderly person in 2008, about a year after the liquor store robbery conviction, and again sentenced to life in prison.

Yes, it is a good idea to notice who is standing around you.

unfortunately same... sketchy, weird looking teens in groups, or oddly 'alone' people... but then again, there was a damn shooting at purdue yesterday between two TAs....
