What USB drive are you using? I have found some that I like, ie waterproof and shockproof. But I don't like the 80-120 price tag as I would like to have a few.

How big (storage size) are you needing? what is your primary use? moving files between locations? Backup of important documents/files? Storing porn?

Again depending on how you want to use it... A cheap method of backup storage is to buy used internal hard drives that you can pick up for as low as $5-$20. All you need is a converter cable (like $20) which has a USB cable with it. Then you can just use the old hard drive as an external drive. Back up whatever you want, unplug it and store it. It's just not the best method if your going to travel around with it or use it frequently. For occasional backups that you are going to store in a safe or something they will work just fine.

    This derailed quickly haha.

I'm not looking for anything big. Putting copies of important documents that is all.

I just buy Sandisk or PNY or some such. Had a few I got off the net that were no names. Most have failed.

Had one that was in rubber armor. Looked nice, but it failed as well. This was with carrying it in my pocket daily and working.

Last batch that we bought was Sandisk. This was to put in a small fire safe inside the gun safe and for another off-site storage medium.

I really like the hard drive idea though, as I have a lot of them that I was going to blast for security. Make my own RAID system that is not even attached to a computer.

This is what I am thinking. I would get a good quality thumb drive (maybe 2-3 for redundancy). Find some anti-static packing foam (1/4" thick if possible) and make a pouch for the drive and keep the pouch in a anti-static plastic bag that can be sealed against moisture. For EMP, I imagine that one can use aluminum tape and fashion a Faraday cage over the anti-static bag or the pouch.

Finding the materials without having to purchase in bulk might be a challenge (I'm not sure what is available at local office supply stores). Additionally, this option would be bulkier so that would be a consideration if it is to be in a BoB.

Depending on the size you want, a portable hard drive would be great. They're not much bigger than a wallet, and have anywhere from 100GB to 1TB of storage. Not really for carrying everyday, but they're great for lots of storage if they're gonna be stationary most of the time. But it's nothing to carry it in your back pocket. Can be had anywhere for under 50 bucks

For a hard drive, I would go with one of those solid state drives. They would be more resistant to shock as there are no mechanical parts to scratch the platters.

I bought a Lacie USB drive to replace the Cruzer I had for years. I have had it about a year and it works fantastic and love the secure partition. The cost was a bit high though.....

So, I bought some off of ebay recently for a few bucks each, exactly the same just not stamped with the Lacie name. I just downloaded the Lacie software to use the secure partition, or you can use TrueCrypt.

I already have a portable drive stashed in a safe deposit box, but decided I wanted to back up some important documents on USB drives that would be easily accessible. I'm not worried about EMP, just water and shock. Purchased a few of these from Newegg recently, got lucky and caught them on sale for $9.99. Now they're back to the regular price of $12.99. Kingston DataTraveler SE9 16GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive - Newegg.com Nice thing about them is they will easily fit inside a GI style matchstick holder. Or pretty much any crush/water proof container you can come up with. I used Truecrypt to create a secure partition and have plenty of room left over to store pics or whatever if need be. The reviews of this thumb drive are very positive, but I'm not carrying them on me, just storing them in secure locations. The body appears to be aluminum, not sure if that would make any difference with the EMP problem. Decent capacity and a small size for a good price.
