All for it. If you want to leach off of my tax dollars, prove you are clean.
It will hurt the children? So you are telling me the kids are better off living with a drug abuser on welfare? BS. IMO they would be better off in foster care.

Oh yeah! A solution proposed by government (testing for drugs) in order to fix a problem caused by government (Drugs criminalized, government welfare)!

I fully support even bigger government in order to fix the problems created by big government.

I would like to amend the bill to add that anyone with a cell phone also not be allowed to receive welfare. If you have enough money for a phone, you don't need my money.

And cable/satellite television, internet, magazine subscriptions...

If you are on welfare you must submit to government agents inspecting your bills and belongings to make sure you only spend your welfare check/food stamps on approved food/clothing and any of your own money on getting off welfare.

Also, you can only buy from certain stores such as Salvation Army, Goodwill, Walmart, Aldi's. No organic. Only bulk, low cost foods. Cheapest calories for the money. Actually I think we should have government food centers that give out the bulk food items directly. Corn. Lots and lots of corn.

Oh look, another problem created by government! Giving people money and the not liking the decisions they make.

Additionally, I'd like to know who is going to pay for the testing?

    MORE tax dollars?
Wouldn't be surprised if some politician's brother-in-law has a drug testing firm. Also wouldn't be surprised to see political contributions increase from testing companies. Just sayin ...

There definitely should be a limit on how long anyone can get free govt handouts. I would spend money to structure procedures insuring the recipients are truly in need. And I like the idea of a bus picking them up to have them work. A big move would be no matter how many kids you produce AFTER going on welfare, your handout remains the same.

    This.

This is feel-good legislation designed to appease the people that think all welfare recipients are lazy leeches. Some are, no doubt, some are there for a reason... but that's beside the point.

I'm willing to bet every cent in my wallet the costs of administration, testing and enforcement will outweigh any savings to be had from kicking addicts off the dole.

Exactly! Now we're talking! [fist shaking] that'll show those liberals...[fist shaking]

The root cause of the problem is welfare. Putting restrictions on it won't fix anything and will likely make things worse. It just needs to be abolished all together. People got along just fine without the government pretending to be their diety.

Meh, it will end up costing more and changing little. People will find a way to beat the system. I'm far more tired of the Federal Income Tax, which enables all of this in the first place.

Gotta say. I was totally for this until I read Rambone's explanation and I see the downsides of this. The "can't end socialism by instituting facism" line is a good one and one that we should remember. They will beat the system and this law won't change much.

I would like to see, instead, that anyone wanting assistance has to show they worked 20 hours a week. Bring back the public working stuff (WPA?) so you have to pick up leaves, knit gloves for kids, paint my fence, get copies for teachers, etc. or something for 20 hours a week. You put in work that benefits society in one way or another (be creative) and you get your money. If you have a good idea of how you can contribute, then submit it to a panel, get approved, and do that. If you are in a wheel chair, then you can read books to kids whose parents are at work. Put in work, get money...simple concept. I don't care if you smoke weed in your free time but you don't get something for nothing.

I would rather see the welfare system go away. That way your concept still applies, but if they're cheaters, at least they're not cheating the gubermint out of my money.

    Medical analogy

    Perfect medical analogy:

Patient (society) takes Drug#1 (Welfare Programs) to alleviate pain (Poverty problem).
Patient (society) takes Drug#2 (Prohibition Laws) to alleviate discomfort (Dislike for addicts).

Drug#1 causes side-effects: nausea, headaches, laziness, entitlement fever.
Drug#2 causes side-effects: black markets, violent tendencies, gangs, cartels, more addicts, Police State.

Now Doctor (Government) gives Patient prescription for Drug#3 to fix the problems caused by Drug#1 & Drug#2.

    More side-effects to follow...

Sometimes you have to realize that a pill can't fix problems that need to work themselves out. Try a natural, free-market cure first.
