What does INGO do or have for water detection that might be incorporated with a full system of other sensors?
My sump pump failed to turn on last night with the heavy rain so I awoke to 1 in of standing water in my basement. I am looking at a loud alarm and something to send a email or text via the internet. I would want to have an initial setup that could expand into a full system for my house.
I am looking into something like the INSTeon stuff.

Under Linux, a shell script should be able to monitor a digital line and send an email to your phone. I've done something similar. SMS and email seem to be equivalent. You'd want to have the sensor some way down your sump pit, so the message wasn't too late.

As often as I read my email, I'm better off with a light or a horn.

You can get these at the hardware store with the sump pumps. It squeals when it detects water. As some have said, you might want to build a little shelf in your sump pit so you can get an advanced warning. Otherwise it can sit on the floor next to it.

If you have a monitored alarm system, you can add something like this to your panel and it will alert your monitoring company for when you arent home during the failure.

Lights and horns are possible, too, but what if you're "out on the town"? What I'm saying is, the email will come to you as an SMS, and you'll get the text message ding rather than it being lost in your email inbox. Send a text to your email address, the "sender" will be your phone address. Send an email to that, and it should show up as a text message.
