We've started using the fireplace on a regular basis (well, not today) and the ash bucket is getting full.

Rather than ask Uncle Google, I'm asking brother INGO.

What do you do with your ash?

Dump it out back. Some in the garden (lowers acidity, so beware), some just in the back corner of the yard.

Just read that ash, diatomaceous earth, and sand make a good "chicken bath", so I may do that with the next bucket.

We heat with wood so a lot is generated, it goes on the driveway and in the garden.

I have a pile out back next to my compost bins. In the spring, I spread what I can on the garden and through the summer, i add ash to the compost bins as they fill up.

You can also get rid of quite a bit by scattering it on the lawn, though you might want to screen out the big chunks.

Soil in my area doesn't really need pH adjustment, since it's slightly basic anyway, but the ash still helps loosen up my clay and adds potassium and phosphorus and probably some other good stuff.

My ashes get hauled about once a week during the winter. Wife does all the work and cleans up afterward.
