What handgun have you personally fired that had the most felt recoil?

I fired a American Derringer Alaskan Survival 45-70 one handed. It had a factory Remington bullet with a little over 400 grains. It was unbelievable and not something you wish to fire again. It turned the owners wrist black and blue. The third round shattered the wooden grips which the factory replaced. Many moons have passed but you never forget schooling.

I fired a Tuarus Raging Bull 500 S&W recently. It surprised me. The recoil wasn't bad at all. It was just like shooting a 12 gauge shotgun. The recoil was straight back. Very manageable.

6" S&W 500Mag with some light & moderate loads, probably.

But an Airweight J-frame with .38Special +p or Kahr CW-40 with some Federal 165gr defensive loads weren't/aren't pleasant.

The snub nose S&W .500 "bear gun" with 500 grain bullets was quite an experience--no compensator or porting, just all recoil. It was about like a double .44 mag. What I remember is my toes coming up in my shoes; it was rocking me back on my heels.

Of the pistols I have shot so far...is my S&W 329PD. Not really painful, but a very stout recoil. It even made some of my .44mag reloads with hard cast lead bullets, walk out of the cases. I did have a good crimp on them too.

S&W M29 used to break open the web of my hand back in the days when I shot IHMS. Started using golf gloves like everybody else.

My worst was a 10" Octagon barrel in a T/C Contender shooting a 320gr lead WFN at 1400fps. The muzzle flip was enough to seperate the forend from the barrel which is why T/C stopped making the snap-on forends. It also peeled the skin of my trigger finger between the first and second knuckles and tore the web of my hand. I had to use my H&R Carbine to get rid of those rounds and sold that barrel shortly there after.

Desert Eagle .50AE. I've fired one on two separate occasions, and both were thoroughly unpleasant. It's the only pistol I've ever limp-wristed (slide locked back with rounds still in the magazine). Made my buddy's Raging Bull .454 seem tame by comparison.

Wow - I've fired DE's side by side in .50AE and .44 mag, and compared to my shooting buddy's 629 with factory ammo, they were a breeze. Could've been grip related, though.

4" 629 has to be the angriest gun i've ever handled. Two cylinders and my hand was shot. It makes the .44 mag encore and 10" barreled .500 S&W seem fun. Even makes rifle cartridge chambered Encores attractive - but that's a completely different kind of recoil and hard to compare to the 629.

Heaviest recoil pistol I have shot was a plain .44mag revolver. Never tried anything bigger. First time shooting it, I expected it to be worse. It's not too bad.

I had a Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 mag that was pretty brutal. I also fired a .44 mag Contender that was hard to hang onto. I've wanted to fire a .500, but the opportunity has never come up. I did get to fire a pistol grip Mossberg 12 ga. one handed, with a 3" bb round. The weight of the gun kept the muzzle down, but it was still quite an experience.
