I spent the day today in Joplin, Missouri. Here's what happens when the sh-- hits the fan in Joplin, Missouri.

    1. Not a bit of looting is heard of from anyone I've talked to today.
    2. People refuse food and water for themselves so that it can be given to their neighbors who are in greater need.
    3. Tens of thousands of people pour in to help.
    4. With no need of a "leader", tens of thousands of people are successfully coordinating a clean up of the entire city.
    5. Dozens of private food and supply distribution sites not affiliated with the Red Cross or FEMA are set up where everyone may stop and get what they need.
    6. A 70' crane lifts a giant American flag right in the center of the city. :patriot:

What I saw today was a 200,000+ person mutual support group in action with absolutely no planning. It's amazing.

It's commendable! My church has a headquarters in Joplin and they are working hard to support the community. Thanks for a great report.

I was pleasantly surprised to read your post, I was expecting something different after reading the title. It is good to hear how the community and the rest of the country is handling this disaster and to see that people still look out for each other. I'm curious to who the other organizations are who are providing support are.

    Joplin, Missouri VS. New Orleans.....

Yep, someone wins this show of humanity...

And Joplin, MO VS. North Minneapolis.

North Minneapolis (where I was stabbed and robbed as a paper boy in the 60's) where the dependant class looted liquor stores and other businesses last Sunday after their tornado.

I better stop right now before I am accused of being racist....God bless Joplin.

I used to live in Springfield, Missouri and I knew Missourians would make me proud. When I was packing relief stuff to bring here, I packed mostly work gloves. Knowing Missourians, I knew this would be what they're looking to use the most.

I'm leaving tomorrow and stopping by Montauk on the way out to get in some trout fishing. This trip was both emotionally draining and inspiring. Very glad I came here. As an fyi, if there are any guys hurting for work, there is no shame coming here looking for work and there's plenty to be done. Even labor ready has signs everywhere looking for day labor.

I've been thru tornado's and they are scary as it comes. I have a deep respect for this force of nature and it's great to see Joplin and other communities pull together to clean up, and start putting some of the pieces back together. Lives can't be replaced but all the rest will get sorted out soon enough.

With all due respect however, the aftermath of a tornado is not a SHTF condition in my opinion. They are natural disasters which are no fault of anyone. They just happen.

SHTF vs. Natural Disaster might seem petty but for future's sake, I don't think it is. Preparing for one is different than the other. People in a natural disaster maintain the high road. In SHTF, the low road will become the norm.

    SHTF is caused my humans.

I wonder does anyone know the % of people in each of those cities on public aid? Wonder if my theory that those that are en "entitlements" will demand more during an emergency that those not.

My google fu is off today and I can't find & of public aid. :(

Pretty amazing stuff compared to reports from other "disaster sites" from around the US in recent years.

I wonder does anyone know the % of people in each of those cities on public aid? Wonder if my theory that those that are en "entitlements" will demand more during an emergency that those not.

I'm curious to see these numbers also, if I get time tomorrow, I may do some digging.

Glad to hear the people of Joplin are pulling together.

Local culture and character do matter.

I'll not be moving to New Orleans, Detroit, etc. any time soon.

    Similar idea:

Hah, I've had several job offers to relocate to Detroit.... NO WAY NO HOW>.... unless all and I mean ALL other options are exhausted.

I've never been to "Nah'wlins" but after everything I've seen and all the people I've met who relocated here after Katrina... no thanks...

Joplin and company should be commended for stepping up and helping out.

The cultural difference is urban vs rural IMHO.

Typical urbanites are always more dependent on local services, fire, police, ambulance, plows, grocery stores, etc...

Rural people know the power, phone, internet may go out for a week (or more.) That the plow may eventually get to them, but don't count on it. That it could take minutes for the sheriff to show up.
