    .
How do you know you are being skimmed except after the fact? Any way to tell when the transaction is going forward? I look at the locks and the general condition of the pumps these days.

I usually look at the machine and if it looks odd, I try to move/remove it with my hand. Alternatively, go inside to pay. That said, if any place raises my suspicion that high, I usually don't go back there.

    Blessings,

Bill has the right of it. If you're suspicious of the card slot, then give it a yank. If it's a skimmer, it'll likely come undone. If it's original equipment you won't do any damage to it.

Bad guys getting more sophisticated using internal skimmers that they install inside pumps.

I agree with the above. Just google credit card skimmers for more information. Some are easier to spot than others--according to the photos, anyway...I've never spotted one in real life myself.

I have no idea where my CC was skimmed - other than it was.

I caught a fraudulent charge on my statement, and during phone calls with Chase, they'd denied another equally suspicious one.

I suspect that it was at the gas station near Huntley, IL, however.

    Nothing lost on my part...thankfully.

Many filling stations are now using tamper evident seals on the pumps. If you notice the seal is broke, it's not just possible, but it's likely there is a skimmer installed inside the pump. The external skimmers are much more easily to spotted if you know what to look for.
