    However, sometimes mineral content in the water can affect how a filter performs otherwise.

    It would need an ion exchange (i.e. a water softener), reverse osmosis, or distillation to eliminate the unwanted ionic species.

    I'd imagine that super hard water would lessen the effective life of a filter for sure.

    I keep potassium permanganate on hand. It kills organics in water and when mixed with something containing glycerin it makes a great fire starter.

    I would love to get a Berkey for the house, and this thread is not helping.

    The Sawyers are nice and compact, perfect for a backpack. But I think I like my Platypus better when outdoors for longer stints.

    I started this thread and I ended up buying a Propur from amazon. 2.75 capicity 3 filter model. I dont have anything against Sawyer or Berkey. I will in the future get a smaller portable unit for camping, b.o.b. ,etc and prob. a Sawyer. The Propur will stay at the house with my well water. Thanks for the input everyone.
