    Started out Monday to have my Lifetime permit copied and laminated at Staples on Pendleton Pike. They only had 2 people working and they were pretty busy with other customers so after 20 minutes I decided to head down the street to FedEx/Kinko's. Store was empty so I figured I would be in and out in no time at all. Guy at the counter asks what I need and I hand him my permit and tell him 3 copys and laminatings.He takes my permit and puts it in the copier hits the button and out come 3 copies in WHITE. (guess I should have known to be more specific) I told him I needed those in pink and he gets all excited stating "you can't copy these, they are FEDERAL DOCUMENTS!" I ask him if this is store policy because I've not read anywhere that you can't do it. He tells me it's a Federal offence to copy a handgun permit. I told him "it's a state license but wish it was Federal" at which point he takes it up a notch and says " IT'S FEDERAL AND AGINST THE LAW"! At this point I thought he was ready to lock the doors and hold me till the Secret Service got there so I just laughed and said "thanks for the info, I guess you being more informed than I just saved me some prison time" I headed down the street to a box and ship place and had 3 copies made and laminated in about 10 minutes.

    I got that reaction at Office Depot, FedEx/Kinko's, and UPS store... I just said the fudge with it, bought a pack of Pink Paper and did it on my office copier @ work. Turned out great.

    Never say never. ;)

    Here's a good teaching opportunity, if not for this enterprising young fellow, then for his manager.

    He might actually thank you for straightening him out!

    My brother in law got his free at Office Depot. The girl who was helping ran the copies and laminated them, and was ringing his purchase up when the manager came over and said they couldn't do that. The manager slid em across the counter and said he couldn't charge him for something they aren't supposed to do.:cool:

    I agree with Cobber: Excellent teaching opportunity. "May I speak with your manager, please?" Remain exceptionally polite. Explain to the manager that you're not angry, offended, upset, or anything like that, you just want to make sure that the employee knows that what you asked to do is legal. Might even include a suggestion like, "Feel free to check it out yourself; there is no law, state or federal, making it a criminal act to copy an IN LTCH." If the manager backs the employee (and a good manager would do so, pending investigation, IMHO,) thank him for his time and take your business elsewhere.

    Alternatively, you can just make your copies and do your laminating "self-service" and avoid the whole argument. ;)

    Blessings,
    Bill

    What is up with issuing a paper lifetime lic. anyway?
    paper=revenue:dunno:
    paper does not have the life of plastic
    papre wears out...thus need to reissue
    paper=revenue
    i bet they earn almost as much reissuing permits

    No big deal. They are just covering their butts and you can't blame them for that. I went to staples to get the correct color paper. I knew they couldn't copy it for me or laminate it. No problem. I can do it in my office. I asked the girl to match the color for me as I am very bad at that. She started to say she couldn't but I cut her off and said I know. She said I can't (laminate it). I cut her off and said I know. I said all I want you to do is match the color. All very nice friendly convo. She and I were smiling the whole time. She smiled and said no problem. Found me the color paper and I was on my way. LOL.

    I had to get a Fedex/Kinko's employee to make several calls to management when he refused to accept my long gun for shipping to the factory for repair. I don't think the clerk "learned" anything though because he was very made it clear he was anti-gun and didn't like shipping the firearm even when several managers gave the OK.

    Nope. There are managers in many businesses who stand behind their employees in public. They may still reprimand them, but they do so in private, with an eye toward correcting a problem, not toward issuing discipline.

    Unless the employee is dead wrong on whatever he or she is claiming, this is the proper approach, and even then, some will correct the error without it looking like they do so "Well... my cashier doesn't have the authority to make that decision, so he told you correctly, as far as he could. I see what you're asking though... and I'll authorize it."

    I've seen a few like this. Wish there were more.

    Blessings,
    Bill

    That's so weird. I work weekends at Office Depot and nearly all of the management are firearms enthusiasts and happy to take care of laminating the ID. I'm pretty sure nobody at the Mishawaka Office Depot would claim it was a federal document and turn you away. I guess it's just store-to-store ignorance, though.

    Had to pull mine out and look. Doesn't seem to be federally issued, like my pilots license that says, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" on the front.
