If it were anyone other than cops in this trial would the sentiment be the same?

Of course not... if this were anyone other than cops, the verdict wouldn't have been "not guilty".

If this had been done by White Business Men... they would have been guilty and given 10-20 years in prison
If this had been done by White Poor Men... they would have been guilty and given 20-30 years in prison
If this had been done by Black Gang members... they would have been guilty and given 50 years to life in prison
If this had been done by Barack Obama... it would have never made the news.

See how awesome our system is?

In a state of acute Pork-i-docis
I still wonder what their reasoning was for their verdict. SOMETHING swayed them.

if I were to guess, I would say that they perceived the victim as a violent, dangerous and unstable person. IME it is amazing how little many people care about an unsympathetic or scary person getting killed, even if the circumstances are questionable.

    That would be my guess.

The part that's much worse than 3+ thugs walking free, is the systematic condoning of what happened.

That gruesome, bloody mess is not a problem to the department and its supporters. This was SOP according to them; nothing went wrong. This was fine police work...no excessive force here. They were "operating as trained," as the defense stated.

Ramos put rubber gloves on as he threatened to "f*** up" Thomas. He knew he'd be spilling some blood. If it is not excessive force to beat a guy in the back of the head until he's in a coma, then what *is* excessive?

A problem can't be fixed until people are willing to admit that a problem exists.

Big win for the police state. Seems they can execute citizens at will and, even if the municipality has to cough up some coin, they get off scot free.

"I Will Not Stop Until We Get Justice," Says Father of Kelly Thomas | KTLA 5

“It’s never been done before – especially in Orange County – to find on-duty officers guilty of murder,” he said. “But to have all counts dropped – they weren’t even in violation of excessive force – that was just unimaginable to me.”

In an afternoon news conference at the Los Angeles office of his attorney, Garo Mardirossian, Thomas said the family most wants to see the officers appear in federal court. Thomas said that until the verdict came down, he hadn’t given much thought to a civil lawsuit he filed in 2012.

“It’s not over. We still have several rounds to go,” Thomas said. “I will not stop until we get justice for Kelly.”

At least they were fired. It looks like this whole thing started from a standard case of contempt of cop. You know somebody's about to go all JBT when they put gloves on and start swinging the baton in classic "B" movie fashion, who even uses batons anymore?

This.... The police force and apparently society at this point just decided that its perfectly ok to beat submissive people to death.

Did the jury have options other than murder? I could see how a jury might be reluctant to find for murder when it's cops "doing their job" whereas they might have voted something lesser were it available.

"Ex-cop acquitted of beating homeless man to death now wants his job back"

[h=1]Ex-cop acquitted of beating homeless man to death now wants his job back[/h]One of the former California police officers acquitted this week of beating to death a mentally ill homeless man wants to get his job back on the force. He and his partner were fired amid the investigation back in 2012.
“I was wrongfully terminated. How do you argue with a jury of 12 who all agree on the same thing?” Jay Cicinelli, former corporal at Fullerton PD, told the Orange County Register on Tuesday.
