While I don't fundamentally agree with it, I can understand the mentality behind that. Every day, we see vids of theft from big stores by organized vandals. Imagine a customer who asks to see a gun, then bolts for the door and a waiting getaway car. Who's gonna give chase? Not employees. Frankly, I'm a little surprised it hasn't happened already.
Like any gun store, they reserve the right to deny not only sales, but can data mine everyone that goes into that area. The employees working the gun counter are not allowed to carry either. I believe they do have private security there in case of that scenario happening.

Was there this past Sunday. Saw a guy ask to see a shotgun that was in the display case. Guy had to hand over his ID before they let him touch the gun. Just another big box store that sells guns/ammo as a sideline.
I'm guessing this is along the lines of recent lawsuits around marketing to minors, which is why we are also seeing an "Are you 18?" dialog box pop on every firearms related website these days.

Bought a Magpul sling anchor. "I need to see your ID." Me "Why?"
Cashier "It's a GUN part!" Me"(Sigh) No, not really. Can you attach it to a firearm? Yes but you can do the same with a Hello Kitty sticker. Would you require ID for one of those?"

Cashier "(Blank look) I need to see your ID."
If I hadn't driven all the way across town I would have left the item there and walked out. It was the last time I ever walk out of an Academy.

This is EAXCTLY why I have given up on most of the LGS. Again, most...not all.
I refuse to do business with any store that requests my ID just to buy ammo, un-serialized parts, etc. Just not going there.

In this case: Their bullsh!t talks, and my money walks...away!

Not going to have many options left soon. Do you buy online?

When I have to...and yes, I know where you are going with that question.
As an IT security guy...I am well aware.

Seriously, I really WANT to support the local brick and mortar shops, but some of them (Shoot USA, Dicks, Academy, etc) just make it hard to want to. That said, some of the small shops are great, but they do not always have the inventory I need. Especially for ammo or reloading supplies.

(Shout out to Aszerigan / Whitetail Trading for my last primer purchase.)

Let’s not forget that a couple of years ago academy pulled “evil assault weapons” off their shelves…and a few weeks later put them right back out for sale
Oh really!? I didn't keep up, didn't really go back to big box stores until Ship-to-Store options became cheaper. I guess maybe they learned from Dick's.

I don’t remember exactly when it happened, but it was after a wildly publicized shooting (might have been the church shooting in Texas), they pulled a lot of them off the shelf I hear that if you asked, they’d bring them out and show you, but they weren’t on display, and yes when I heard that, I went and checked and they were none on the shelf

Or when Dicks took them off their shelves citing a mass shooting and how they just couldnt in good conscience sell them anymore. But they quietly shipped them off to the Field and Stream hunting and fishing stores that most people didnt know they own.

Somebody eventually called them out for that one.

While still a problem, this issue is mitigated to a large extent.
I was told by a manager I Rural King that not one of their guns on display are functioning.
They have all been disabled in one fashion or another so they won't fire.
Manager told me that's why when you want to buy a gun it has to come from the safe in the back.
The display is just that, for display only.

Sadly, I suspect part of this "take your ID" for anything related to firearms has a component of the Federal government pressuring retailers to do this, then buying commercial datasets to correlate with other data. Given enough time they will know who the majority of people are who have firearms and know how to use them.

This is how the subversive scum skirt the 4th amendment. While building a registration database in the shadows.

I was so excited any Academy coming to Westfield. I think I'll just skip it now.

    Did anyone leave feedback?

    In the country, hopefully.
What do they do with the info ? Do they just look at the I.D to confirm the buyer is an adult, or do they scan it and it goes into some sort of "marketing" file ?
I believe that they use your data for multiple purposes and its policy. So even if you are paying with cash, they can link an identity to each item.
Free info that I'm sure the store can sell to somebody, just using a politically correct cover to collect it.
I was at the new Carmel store saturday, bought 1000 blazer brass (for 21.6 plus tax after teacher discount) paid cash, cashier asked for id but just checked it, nothing recorded at all.
    Quick look and handed back.

Not saying they're angels, not defending them. Just saying they didn't scan it or enter anything.
