I saw a trade on here and I wanted the gun. I had two of the guns that the person wanted in trade.
Personally I felt I was getting the better end of the deal because the person didn’t ask for any cash on my side.
So I brought 50rds of range ammo and a 20rd box of self defense ammo to throw in with my gun
That person was happy and I was as well. So it worked out for both of us.
If that’s how a person wants to do it let ‘em be.
I have nothing against doing fair trades.
A lot of times with trading people want to "win" as opposed to just being fair.
I have put lesser priced items out for sale or trade.
I have never done it with expensive firearms.
It sounds like you both walked away happy, which is how it should be.

LOL, Years ago on the Maryland Shooters Forum there was a set of Bongo's that were listed and bumped ferociously for 9 months to a year. Everybody complained about them. But they were within the rules of the forum.
A new thread was started and a bunch of members kept getting donations to buy the bongos and put them out of their misery,
As I recall, they went to a range and did a mad minute with a bunch of full autos on those poor bongos.
Its a thread better than the Wallet here.
    Andy might remember it also.
So in the end the seller got his asking price. Lol

I am always open to trades but I don't specify what. After many, many Facebook marketplace trade offers on various trucks, etc, I can say sometimes they work out. You never know what cool stuff you might get offered!

These days I'm cash poor but gun rich, so awhile back one I wanted came available and I had a couple I didn't really want anymore, so we worked a trade.

Price haggling is supposed to get worked out before the exchange takes place.
Part of that can be additional pics or answers to questions about condition etc.
Once a time and place is worked out both parties know what to expect.
Correct. If a person asks me to take less on the spot, I will walk away no matter what. I don't see too much of this practice going on anymore, and I would like to think it's because others respond to it the same way I do.

I have traded even across. It is not that I did not have the money, or thought I was trading up / down. If I have an item that I bought for a specific purpose, and I no longer have that need, I have no use for the item. Trading for something I would use is a good trade.

Sometimes it has to do with a wife deal. Say she thinks she would want to participate and selects something she thinks she wants. After a few times and some lost interest, she no longer wants to participate. A direct trade for something I have been looking for is a win-win.

Yeah, gun for gun trades do seem rather VERY limiting.

I also agree that you should just sell for cash and be done with it so you can buy what you want. You can feasibly do that in under a week for the right asking price, but WTT requires somebody on the other side wanting to do the same. At best you are looking at MONTHS, at worst it never moves.

I think deep down its somebody wanting something for "nothing", or at least no cash outlay. Which probably also explains the insane resistance to folks becoming site supporters. Especially as sellers. (You'll make that $20 back on your first sale)

Selling means they arent going to get the full retail they paid, and no gun store is going to take sunk costs like ammo as a barter to even the deal.

The only trades I have seen that makes sense and tends to move quickly are consumables. Its stupid easy to find somebody who has lots of one caliber that is willing to get more of another caliber in return. When I got out of 40 I traded a gent here for some 9. We both walked away happy and neither lost anything on the deal as I recall. Small accessory items paid in ammo also seems to move here in my experience.

Speaking of long running ads, if its been up for 6+ months, give it up. You are asking too much or nobody wants it. And if your wife tells you that you MUST sell something, please dont put it here for a ridiculous amount knowing it will never move just so you can keep it. :):

I've traded here before a few times. Sometimes it was deliberate, other times I had asked for the time to make a sale of my own to free up some cash; the other person decided a trade was preferable. I've been happy each time, though there is one gun I wouldn't mind having back.

Exactly, I haven't had that happen since the days of the Trader paper, if you're old enough to remember that? In fairness I didn't check your profile too see if your age is listed.

I have done a couple trades. Once a very specific trade that I was told wouldn't happen, yet it did.

I think there are people that have things they don't want and by offering a trade, it could get what people want without tapping into cash. Could make a transaction smoother since both parties don't need to go through the process of creating an ad.

But overall, selling and buying is better.

There are certainly instances where a trade may make more sense. There are a couple members that routinely have some higher end firearms that I would consider.
Except they've always done something to them in the way of a modification. I can be pretty picky at times. The only mods I really do to any of mine are optics, and then I am very careful to not scratch or ding a rail or mounting surface. I know they are tools, I get that, I just like mine to stay near factory condition and I keep boxes and literature as well.

I miss the Trader paper. Got a Mossberg Model 40 U.S. for 50 bucks, and an Ithaca Model 37 for 75 bucks out of there when I was a kid.
