    I love my Marlin 336, even though I've only shot it once. It just looks the way a classic rifle should look to me. My dad had a scope on it when he gave it to me, but I took it off, because it looks so good free of any scope. This just seems like one rifle that I will always use iron sights with. If I do add a scope, I think I would pick the smallest 4x scope possible, with the lowest mounts.

    Go with the Marlin, pre-Remington. Second choice, Henry. They are what lever actions guns are supposed to be. Beautiful, durable, accurate. The Mossbergs, except for the SPX, would be a good option, though. They have a good reputation and maintain the traditional appearance.
