I would buy an AR if I could get one chambered in .45 Win Mag. Double duty as a deer rifle and a very potent Home Defense cartridge; it makes more sense to me than the either the 5.56 or .30 Carbine that I currently have.

for what its worth i would go with the wsm action aswell. you can probably build a 358bfg off a bolt action for less than you will have in the ar setup and imo have a better rifle.

im in the process of waiting on a 35 barrel from shelin for my win 70 25wssm

My thoughts also---I shoot a 358IDC on a win wssm action. others I know that work are Savage short actions in wsm and rem model 7's. I know these work because my brother owns the reamer and these are actions he has worked with.

another thing to consider is whose reamer you want to use---some are min spec or have shoulders altered which will require more work when reloading the cartridges.

Can a Handi Rifle be chambered in the 358 WSSM?
It can but generally isn't recommended due to action strength as suggested. There are some guys who have done it but are keeping their loading in the 2200fps velocity range which keeps the pressure down. The best "recommended custom chamber" for this rifle is the 357max with which you can obtain the same velocity range and still have a legal Ind deer. here is a link that gives some info on the ctg.

I've read the 357max site many time. My handi rifle is in 357 max now. I just not sure if the 18.75 twist is enough. Like most, I always want more. 2600 fps from a 180-200 gr bullet might suite me a little better. I still need to play with the 180s.

i don't know all the technical details, but someone is making these barrels for savage and remington bolt action rifles over by kokomo. Glenn has been selling them like crazy at bass n bucks in wabash. relative bought one. its one heck of a shooter. It was shooting great at 300 yds. didnt try it past that. www.bassandbucks.com give him a call. he was selling ammo for it too.

There are three reasons I would hesitate to do a .358 WSSM on a Handi... (although you can get a Handi in a .308 and it runs about the same pressure)... the case head diameter is larger... .473" vs. .535" which at the same chamber pressure is 28% more force on the breech face... second, If you just go out and buy a Handi in .357 Mag, chances are you're getting an SB1, which isn't going to take modern rifle pressures... third, I'd have to know for sure what the dimension is, if it's .357" it could raise pressures too much.

I just reread my last post and realized it is confusing---I don't think the 357max can reach the same velocity range as the 358wssm---what I meant was you can get it into the same speed range as the guys shooting a 358wssm in a handi(2200fps). If your twist is shooting a 180 now it should shoot one moving faster---bullet stability is also a function of speed---the same bullet will generally stabilize in a slower twist if shot faster---trick is getting the speed. My bet is you will need to go to the 358 to get what you want---sounds like you know the limits of the 357max.

He says it is easily a 600 yard gun for deer

Not to thread jack, but this just shows how dumb our deer hunting regs are.

If you can go deer hunting with a super short magnum with ballistics that exceed .30-06, why not let people just hunt with a gol-darned .30-06?

I was told that the philosophy is that not everyone will lay out the $$$ and trouble to build the exotic gun. Only a few that have some shooting sense. But if you open it up then every idiot will be slinging high powered bullets in every direction.

I know of two people in Indiana that can build you a rifle. One person is Dexter Lutter who lives in LaOtto, In. the other person lives in North Manchester In and runs a top of the line gunsmith shop his name is Mark Penrod.

Agreed. Or specifically allow certain popular "low" power cartridges. 7.62x39, .30-30, .35 Rem, .45-70 for starters

FWIW, the .358 WSSM is not a 600 yard deer gun. 250yd - "easy" - at least ballistically. 300yd if you know how much your bullet will drop. 400 might be possible if you can deal with 35" of drop and have a bullet that will do the job at low velocity, like the 180gr SSP or the 200gr FTX. The problem there is you're much more likely to get a deer at 50 yards than 400, and then you have to worry about those bullets blowing up at 50 yards.

So in a nutshell - it's a 300yd gun if you're good, and I wouldn't ever push it beyond that.

sounds like a lot of work just to kill deer...the new muzzle loader will shoot 200 yards...plus most Indiana guys dont shoot past 100 yds at deer...encore in 460S&W/480 ruger will do also
