Opossums can carry several diseases in which are transmissible to livestock. Of particular mention:

Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis 

I'm not going to advocate one side or the other.

In regards to cats being thin, another possibility is that they have a parasitic overload. Not too uncommon with animals that eat wild rodents and birds.

You don't lke possums? I don't understand why you need to kill it. Unless , of course, you need meat.

If you think you need to, I would use a 22. A single shot is all you need. Or a rock.

Are you kidding me? A single shot .22 to kill one of the toughest, dumbest and smelliest critters in th is world? Last one I had to kill to get it out my detached garage /workshop took 6 shots to the head, from a .22 rifle at extremely close range before it even fell over.

Walther P-22! Great little light auto that is a ton of fun to shoot! And it has a rail you could put a light on if you wanted too!

I've taken out several possums and a few raccoons with the p22 in the hen house.
