I’m thinking take a 5 gallon bucket fill it full of sand . Then fasten a pvc to the lid ,fill it full of foam so the sand doesn’t come up in gun . Shoot straight in to it ,then recover bullet to measure for barrel size / bullet size for reloading.
Will this work or destroy bullet? Thanks for the help

I was told a better, quieter, less violent way to get the barrel diameter.

Take a slightly oversized (for your bore) soft lead black powder ball. Use a wooden dowel to drive it all the way through the barrel into the bore Then drive it back out and measure the ball.

    Edited for accuracy.

    Or this

If what you want is actual minimum bore diameter, cameramonkey's procedure is probably what you want. If what you want is chamber and lead Cerrosafe would be a good option.

^^^ This IS the way to slug your barrel. ^^^

Dowel rod sections long enough to drive the ball all the way through the bore. Hardwood dowels are best. They can be placed end to end. Drive with a non steel mallet, because it's very likely you will hit the muzzle.

If the OP can't readily find balls easily, I might be able to fix him up, depending on logistics, schedules and stuff?

I believe your initial idea will provide less than accurate or desirable results.
    ^This
Shooting into sand is likely to deform the projectile.
You may or may not be able to see the difference with the naked eye.
Slug your barrel as Cameramonkey suggested and you'll be good to go.

The reason I asked if he's planning on shooting cast or jacketed bullets. If cast, yes slug the bore. If jacketed, no real reason to slug the bore.

A certain man worked on firearms as a hobby and often for friends.

He had a trap door in the pantry that opened to a sand filled crawl space. Sometimes he would open that door and shoot into the sand to test his repair work. The bullets recovered from the sand were deformed, only good for recasting the lead.
I am sure a 5 gallon bucket will catch pistol bullets, probably m16 bullets, not sure about large bore rifles.

Since he moved to Indiana, he no longer has a sand crawl space, making testing less convenient. Good luck

If you live in the country fill up a bunch of milk jugs with water and shoot into them.
