you can go into a firefight w/ a quartermaster company if you want. someone w/ an infantry background will come secure your corpse, or snatch you back after youre a pow.

See there lies the problem, turtle. You believe the only people who are capable of doing bad things are 11B's. Yes they can do that, but so can the rest of the US Army. Some of the best I have been to Indian Country with have been the POG's I have been around. Less BS attitude. But, hey what do I know. I am not a turtle or a cherry...

i came into the army as an Infantryman, and have now worked with most of the pogs in passing, and am currently part of an MP company under a scout squadron. theres no comparison between the soldiers, ncos, or officers. i hate when people talk about the Infantry like all its good for is "catching bullets". haha. everyone in the Infantry is stupid. haha. i maxed the asvab. i could have done almost any job in the army, but i picked the Infantry.

I have two boys and one girl, all age 5 or younger, so I have a while until this happens, but I have promised myself something every since I turned 18, I would support whatever decision my children make in regards to the military, so long as it is their decision to make!

My opinion would be the Air Force also. They do have better living easier jobs and also better jobs for when she would get out of the military.Me i was dumb and went into all combat arms jobs so there isnt much of that i can do when i get out of the ARMY.But the are alot of other great benefits in other branches as well. The National guard is a really good one if she is interested in going to college full time they pay 100% of your tuition. And it would be only like once a month that she would serve after she got out of basic training and her tech school for whatever job she would choose. But also other reserve branches might offer that to im not sure. But some good advice would be to go talk to all the branches and find out what they have to offer. What benefits they have. And if they have and kind of bonuses. But i wouldnt try and push her into something that she dont necessarily want to do.Let her make the decision just give her some tips and advice to what to ask recruiters and other people that she may know thats already in the military. But let her make the final decision because if she gets into something she dont like she is going to be very miserable for the years that she signed up for. I know from experience because some of my army buddies hate their job and wish they could just get out everyday.I hope this little bit of information is of some help to you and your family. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask

I didn't take the time to read all the way thru the thread, but heck why should that stop me from adding my two bits. I am retired NAVY. 20 years and did 13 of it in the pacific/io. Even did my share in sunny southeast asia.

Now if she wants a easy way out, join the Air Force. But hey if you are looking for real easy, why join at all.

I think she should base her decision on what she wants to do job wise and then try the service that best meets that need. I mean she could join the air force and be a bus driver. She may join the Marines and be a computer specialist or the Navy may offer cryptology (my personal favorite). So each can have something to offer.

But if you just want easy, then stay home and live with mom and dad. But if your willing to sign a blank check for the amount "upto and including your life" joing the military. Go for the branch that can best meet your needs. Oh and a plug for my shallow water brothers/sisters: Don't forget to check out the Coast Guard.....:)

Ok, my 18 year old daughter just graduated high school. A friend of hers signed up for an 8 year stint in the Navy and was supposed to begin next January. He screwed up royally 2 nights ago and got in trouble with the law. He has now been kicked out of the Navy before he even got started... they told him they don't want him any more.

While Jakal and I were discussing with my daughter what a dumba$$ this kid was for screwing up like he did, she started realizing the benefits, education, pride, etc. that he has now forfeited. Low and behold, my daughter actually started considering joining a branch of the military herself. Yes, she's actually giving it serious thought!

What do you guys & gals think? I can't talk to my family about this because they would automatically go into panic mode thinking she'd be shipped immediately off to Iraq, raped and murdered.

I guess what I want, is to get a feel for what you all think about the idea of an 18 year old girl signing up for the military? What branch would you recommend and why? What are some things to consider/talk to a recruiter about?

The choice to serve ones nation is something that should be viewed with great pride and admiration, not only by the parents of the soldier, but by everyone that lives under the banner of freedom they provide. My daughter did and it made her a stronger more capable woman for the experience. Support her in everything she does in life and know you did your best to instill right and wrong into her from the moment she first opened her eyes and breathed that first breath. All those experiences throughout her life has lead her to make this choice. Sounds like you've done a damn fine job. I applaud you and your daughter and wish her well in whatever she decides.

EDIT.. well crap. someone bumped a five year old thread. So OP, how did it turn out? She 5+ years into her military career and sailing toward retirement?

The wife was in the Navy. She served on an aircraft carrier and serviced the avionics on the F-18. Her advice is to get everything in writing that they promised about college money and such.

Civil Air Patrol cadets who enlist in the Air Force go in as E3. They also have a step up if they want to got the Air Force Academy.

Civil Air Patrol is the Air force Auxillary. We take our orders from 1st Air Force.

Ah, the panic. I served in the AF and my daughter, one day out of the blue, joined the Marines. I offered to go to training with her was my protection instinct was so strong.

This is what I told her before she joined.

    The AF sleeps in beds.
    The Navy sleeps in bunks.
    The Army sleeps on cots.
And the Marines sleep on the ground.

    Didn't dissuade her one bit.

I come from a long line of military service. Both of my grandfathers were O-4's in the Army (one was Army Air Corp). My father is also a retired O-4 from the Army. With that being said, after 9/11, I told my dad I was going to join the Army to get "pay back". I'll pass along to you (the OP) what my father told me. . . "F#$@ that, you've seen Army life, go Air Force". Keep in mind, I have nothing against the Army, I work with them all the time since I'm in one of the most Army jobs the Air Force has.

My father had several "O" friends that would have "Air Force appreciated day". Basically, they would take their sons to Air Force bases and chow halls.

My advice stands the same as my father's to me, tell her to go Air Force (Navy is a good alternative). I will say that when I was an aircraft maintainer, it was CAKE, and had a good practical basis for jobs when/if I got out as one (But I decided to cross-train). Just tell her not to be security forces or services. If she's bright, tell her to get into Avionics. There's FANTASTIC paying civilian jobs in that field.
