On a practical level, is anyone making gas turbines that can approach the life cycle of a steam turbine yet?

If not, how much efficiency is lost and how much more will it cost to burn the natural gas to heat steam to expand through turbines instead of directing the exhaust through a gas turbine?

I may or may not be building something in my back yard.
