If you had $350 to buy an HD shotgun...what would you choose? and why?

    Here are the parameters:
you can buy new or used.
you have up to $350...no more...can't be more than $350 OTD.
no online purchases. local only. INGO classifieds, armslist, LGS, etc.
must have an 18.5"-20" barrel, pump action
this gun is for HD, SHTF, range fun
    Mossy 500, Rem 870, Winchester, S&W riot, ???, whatever...

(after I buy the shotgun I'll be purchasing a magpul stock (if applicable), ghost ring sights, and an additional 28" vent ribbed field -or other hunting- barrel)

An old Highstandard riot gun? I think it would blow away any current production gun in that price range.

Id look for a mossberg 500, but Im a lefty, and I like the location of the safety, plus the whole 870 ejector thing just kills me. They've had years to make it easily user serviceable, and they refuse.

If I couldnt get one for the right price, maybe an H&R partner pump or a Stevens 320. Theyre cheap and reliable.

    Money tight?

Single shot 20 gauge shotgun, H&R or NEF, etc, and a bunch of ammo.

I'd want a sling and a butt cuff on it. Maybe one of those oversized sights like from XS or the like.

With the money left over (say $150 to $200), I'd buy a bunch of ammo. Maybe save for a class.

I bought a 12 Ga rem 870 express with a rifled slug barrel from WM OTD for $320. I then bought a 28" vent rib rem choke & 18.5" police barrel. I haven't added the magpul goodies yet. I want the laserlyte center mass laser for it next.

The wood is really nice on the gun which is why I bought it. I was lurking in the ammo cabinet at WM about a year ago and saw it as I was leaving disappointed with the ammo situation.

It it was one of my best impulse buys. :draw:

Find a used 870 either with an 18" barrel or cut down a longer one. Actually I prefer a 20" smooth bore deer barrel as they come with rifle sights and are IC choked which will g e a tighter pattern. I'd go with a Mossberg or Maverick 8& before I'd trust a new Stevens or H&R pump gun. With any leftover money, I'd get a sidesaddle. There's more that you can add, but not much needed...

    500. I hate/loathe/despise the slide release on the 870. It's just all wrong. I personally would go with the 8-shot version then down the road he a side saddle and speed-feed stock.

Its tough to go wrong, really.

The standards are the 870 and 500. CZ also makes a home defense shotgun that can be had just under your price point. CZ is, as usual, a lot of value for the money. I handled one at USDS awhile back and was impressed with the sights and the general feel of the gun.

I've got a semi auto cz and it's definitely a nice gun, especially for the money. The CZ 612 is set up a lot like the 870 in terms of slide release and safety, so if you like the 870 the cz is worth taking a look at.

Mossberg 500 with a 26" field barrel and 18" defense barrel. Leave it alone and let it work.

second choice would be an older 870 with 28" field barrel and 21" IC with rifle sights. Again leave it alone and let it work

Stevens 320, some models come factory with the ghost ring sights,(fiber optic front sight) pistol grip stock, based on the Winchester 1300 pump action. They are out there, ya just gotta look. $299 retail easily $350 OTD

Either a good used 870 or 500, either will serve you fine. Both function great, have plenty of options, and eat anything. I have a 590 and a 870 and like both, the safeties and pump releases are way different though so those play a big part in usage.
