I got my 590A1 used for about $350, but that was probably 10 years ago. With everything it has, you can't go wrong! No need to spend as much for the add on stuff that the others will need. Already has a large magazine tube. Already has ghost ring sights. The heavy walled barrel is no slouch. Dual action bars, etc. You'd spend a lot more to add all that to an 870 or a 500. Perfect HD shotgun, right outa the box!

    500. Safety on the back. It's not going to "rattle" in your closet, and I wouldn't worry too much about fit as I would function. Safety on the back is universal, and you can visually verify.

Mossberg 500 or 590. It's primarily what the military uses and is US made. The 870, not so much anymore. Plus it is much, much easier to do tactical reloads with the Mossberg from a side saddle.

Maverick 88. Has the same trigger guard safety I'm used to on other arms, uses most Mossberg 500 parts, 20" barrel, 7 shot, used for $200.
All the rest goes for 00 buck, possibly low-recoil.

I agree with Spencer Rifle. I bought my Mav 88 20" with black nylon stocks for under $200, and put all the nice trimmings I wanted on it for less than another hundred. It's served me well in 3-gun and turkey hunting without a hitch.

As a huge fan of Ithaca 37's my advise is the Stevens 320. It's a remake of the 37 but with dual bars. Should be a great cheap gun

I believe you're referring to the Stevens 350, based on the old Remington model 17 , later made by Ithaca as the model 37.
Stevens 320 is based on the Win 1200/1300.

I bought an 870 express for $150, put a +2 extension and a 20" barrel on it for my HD gun.

That way I can keep my Mossberg nice for everything else. :)

I run an 870 Exp Supermag Turkey model, 23" VR Remchoke.............got it used, have $215 in it.
It's been converted to the old style mag spring retainer.
    Decent field gun too.

They used to offer the 350 in both GR and bead options but now it looks like GR only. They do look to be solid guns. I have considered one myself , the steep stock drop kinda bothers me tho' wonder if that would be an issue w/ more pronounced recoil or muzzle flip like with the shotties of yore?

I bought an unfired 870 with the 18.5" barrel and a 28" field barrel from a fellow INGOer for $350 a couple weeks ago. Have since added the Remington magazine extension & a sidesaddle. Do I win?!?!?!

I'd also look at a maverick 88. Its the stripped down 500 without being drilled/tapped for a scope, I THINK (double check please) only chambered in 2 3/4, etc.

Not sure you can get them with the 18" defense barrel though.
