    Educate Educate Educate! make sure they know what it is and what it can do. The best thing you can do is teach them gun safety. With that out of the way, IMO a gun with nothing in the chamber is a paper weight. If your wife is gonna need it, shes gonna need it now, i'm sure she will be shaking enough if a situation arrises, the less things she needs to do to make the gun go bang the better...

    Kepp one on the chamber. As others have aid educate your children, and if they are too young to be trustworthy then take measures to secure the pistol, but always leave it loaded. A self defense gun should be ready to do its job 100% of the time... unless you are cleaning it. I grew up around guns and I had a healthy respect for them. As another post said, my mother had a rule that I didn't go into her purse at any time for any thing, and I never did. Even if I had, I was taught how to safely handle firearms.
